My 13 month old weighs 2 stone

My little boy was born weighing almost 11lbs and he’s always been a hungry baby. He hasn’t been weighed since he was around 4/5 months but he had always been on the 98th centile. He is very tall for his age, judging by children older than him that are near to his height. His current weight isn’t 100% accurate as it was weighing me then me holding him but still, 2 stone seems a lot for his age. Should I be concerned?

My 3 year old, tall DD only weighs 2st6lb and she isn’t small. Have you seen a HV or GP with him regarding it. Seems a lot for a 13 month old.

I would see a Dr or hv. That is awfully big for a baby.

What size clothing does he wear?

LurkYouLongtime · 06/12/2018 09:48

It's a lot but my DS is the same. Very big and heavy for his age, always been in clothes a stage ahead of his age. Also born at 11lbs! No health or weight concerns, just a big, solid child.

Just make sure your DS is healthy, active, plenty fresh air and exercise and good healthy food. It will even out. Is he walking? My DS slimmed down loads after 15 months (when he started walking properly).

Where is weight on the centimetres chart? Tbh you need him properly weighed....

notsomumsymum · 06/12/2018 09:51

My son was 2 stone at his 10 month check Blush. He started walking at 16 months and it all kind of balanced out. He’s 2 now and weighs just over 2 stone so looks in proportion now.

RC10 · 06/12/2018 09:56

I haven’t spoken to my HV yet as I only weighed him today out of curiousiy. I always knew he was bigger than others his age but I never really considered it an issue. He isn’t even particularly chunky and looks all in proportion so it’s strange to me that he weighs so much. He isn’t walking yet so maybe it’ll balance out when he’s properly on the move.

I will speak to my HV, get him weighed properly and see what they think. Thank you everyone x

I had huge babies too, the middle 2 stayed on the 98th centile for weight until they were 18 months- both on lower centiles for weight than height from 3ish.

Booboostwo · 06/12/2018 10:21

My DD was the same. Born on the 50th centile and shot to above the top centile for weight. At 12mo she weighed 12 kilos. Now that she is 7yo she is still extremely tall, 97th centile, but her BMI is on the lower end of the normal age because she is very skinny. It seems that she was fueling all the height growth.

Try not to worry. My DS weighed 27lb 12 at 10 months. 28lb 12 at 12 months, he’s now 17 months, walking and running everywhere and weighs 28lb. I think in my case it was because my DS was still having milk through the night, then he just stopped. He was very chunky though!

My 12 month old is also 2 stone. But he's 98th centile for weight, height and head size so perfectly in proportion

I think you're right to ask about it.

The issue is that if you underfeed a child they may not reach their height potential-ie remain smaller than they should have.

It works in a different way if you over feed a child. They initially grow tall. Parents think that they are just naturally tall. But then they stop growing upwards and grow outwards. They don't just end up taller in the end. They just reach their height sooner.

If you/your dh/other people in the family are very tall. It may be that he is just fine, and will be tall. I knew someone with twins who aged 3yo one was literally twice the weight of the other-he took after his 6'6" rugby playing father and the other took after the mother who had the height and figure of a petite ballerina.

It's not necessarily too much. I've just looked back at my dd and she was 24lb at a year. But only 28lb at 2 years. But I did realise that she was increasing too much, and was careful about what she ate. I'm talking about giving her piece of apple rather than a biscuit, or making sure I didn't say "just another mouthful" when she'd had enough. And she's ended up about my height and average weight for her height.

My DS was 2 stone at 12 months. Hes now 15 months and it's slowed right down since walking/ running. He was 12'3 at birth and has always been way off the centiles but is slowly getting closer.

LondonLassInTheNorthPole · 08/12/2018 21:10

My 14 month old nephew is 29 lbs but is also 85cm long so just a big boy in general, he doesn't look over weight ...
