2 year old sickness bug

My son turned 2 in October, around 12am (Monday night/Tuesday morning) I heard him cry in bed and be sick so I ran to him and sorted him out and cleaned it up etc. He was sick a couple more times while I was doing this. Took him downstairs so I could keep an eye on him so my partner could sleep and was sick again. Put him in our bed as he was tired and wanted to sleep (I hardly slept), he woke about 2am and was sick again but was more watery as he didn't have anything else to bring up. That was when he was last sick. This morning he's had a few plain crisps and some water but doesn't want any food that I offer him and is very lethargic, drifting in and out of sleep and definitely not his usual whirlwind self. I'm a first time parent and have no idea what to look out for if he gets sick. He's currently asleep again now and has a slight temperature from what I can feel (our thermometer is broken). What is best for him? Do I just let him sleep and keep offering him food when he wakes up? I feel so helpless

DD (18m) had similar recently - sick 15 times in 12 hours.

I spoke to our GP on the phone who said to keep giving sips of water and look out for signs of dehydration. A key sign is their mouth looking dry.

The sleepiness seems par for the course but if at any point your DC seems too difficult to rouse you might want to seek advice.

Having said that, best to keep out of the drs surgery to avoid infecting vulnerable people if you can (that's why I called our doctor rather than making an appointment)

@INeedNewShoes thanks for your reply. Yes I definitely don't want to take him out of the house, as you say I don't want others catching it and for himself too to be comfortable at home. I've just called his name a couple of times and he woke up so I think we are ok there although he's still very sleepy looking. Hopefully it's just tiredness and he's just 'off' his food. Will try him with some toast soon maybe.

Hell be fine if he takes fluid, ice lollies and ice pops count as fluid.

Keep him hydrated, sips of room temp water. Every half hour. If he doesnt vomit for a few hours then he can have a bit more water at a time. When he hasnt vomited for 4 hours, you can try a dry cracker or a small piece of plain toast. If that stays down, then a bit more etc.

You needd to let his stomach calm down before you put too much back in it iyswim.

Regarding his lethargy, keep an eye. He will probably want extra naps, but if he doesnt wake up properly in between and want to do things like watch tv, then give the GP a call to double check.

Keep an eye on his temperature and check him for rashes, if you need to give calpol, just remember he must be drinking water as well or it will impact his kidneys. Any rash that doesnt blanch when you press it should make you call the GP immediately.

He’s not going to feel like eating - he’s been sick half the night and it’s his first tummy bug so he must be feeling awful. Little teaspoons of water are the way forward. If they stay down move on to sips of water. If they don’t stay down, tiny bits of crushed ice or a quick suck on an ice pop. Don’t bother trying any food today unless he asks for it - you wouldn’t feel like eating today if you’d been sick all night either. Try a cracker or half a slice of dry toast in the morning and see if that stays down.

Meanwhile, let him sleep but keep checking that he rouses when there’s stimulation and he can have some Calpol if he’s been drinking and keeping fluids down.

Thank you so much to everyone. He is starting to worry me a little. He's had 2 bites of a little toast but he's currently just laying on the floor watching the tv but it kind of looks like, the lights are on but nobody's home. I'm not so worried about the eating, it's more how lethargic and still he is. I can't see any rashes on him etc

Mine went like this after a sickness bug once and it turned out that he was brewing an ear infection which didn’t present with pain and crying until 12 hours later.

A good "narna" has done the trick. He ate one of those and has fallen back to sleep. Poor boy, it's really hit him hard.

Will he take ice pops?
It's horrible isn't it.

Hi op my DS 3.5 had similar this weekend. Vomited a lot in the night, and literally has not eaten for 3 days - until today that is! He has properly got his appetite back but he is still a bit trumpy and burpy.

He’s a skinny boy too... I was really worried the first few days but it’ll pass. Just keep offering sips of water he will get his appetite back eventually!

Cupcakes1234 · 04/12/2018 20:49

Thank you everyone for making me calmer lol. From what I remember in the summer he wasn't very keen on ice pops or ice cream 🤷🏼‍♀️ lol. Think it's a bit too cold for him lol. It is horrible for them isn't it! Just wish I could take it all away for him. Hopefully he'll soon get his appetite back, but they do like to worry us!
