How long should it take for a fever to go down in 1yo?

My 1yo DS has an ear infection and cold; he is having antibiotics and regular neurofen. It's day four of both medicines, and his temperature hasn't shifted from 39 degrees. Should it have changed by now, or do you think i should take him to the doctors? I didn't want to take him out of the house to the waiting room of doom (takes sooooo long) if I can help it.

Have you given calpol too? A temperature in itself isn't a problem though if he isn't in pain.

If the antibiotics haven't started to work in 4 days I would get him seen again, usually they work quickly.

I think his ear is causing him less pain, but temperature remains. I stopped giving calpol as well as it didn't seem to be bringing his temperature down at all

How is he in himself?
Eating, Drinking, peeing, Acting normal?

A temperature that doesnt come down with calpol and is still there after 4 days of antibiotics need further investigations

agree it should be coming down - have you tried neurofen based one I find calpol not that efficient

I have a lot of experience with ear infections sadly and I’d say with almost total certainty you are going to need different antibiotics to shift that ear infection. Is he well in himself? Is there any swelling behind the ear?

Is he well-ish "in himself" as they say? If so, donnt worry about the temperature. It's just a sign tht his body is fighting an infection. I think that it's generally thought now that antibiotics shorten an ear infection by about 24 hours-which is a significant amount of time if he's in pain, but if he isn't it's just a waiting game.

When my children had tonsillitis antibiotics worked by day two.

One is 1 and the other is 3. I'd be concerned if they haven't started working and go back to GP.

My DDs temp wouldn't shift before we got her seen by the GP she spent an entire day in bed running 39, so we knew something was definitely wrong. Two days after antibiotics she was on the mend and eating and drinking again.

I always tried using a mix of calpol and nurofen. Calpol then nurofen 2 hours later.

Thanks everyone- he's on the mend now- horrible to see our babies poorly!
