Hi all. Dd is 18 months and to say she is a sickley child would be an understatement. Shes been presribed an inhaler as they suspect asthma but will not diagnose until age 2. She is full time at nursery so i expect her to pick up some bugs but she is ill every other week. Been back and forth the doctors as as soon as she is getting over one thing, we move on to another. They keep prescribing her antibiotics and refuse to investigate further. Surely this isnt normal? Shes spent last week with diarrhoea which seemed to improve towards the weekend but its now returned with vomiting. Doctor has prescribed 5th course of antibiotics and an inhaler. Im currently in work (shes with dp) who tends to just back down and agree with doctor. What do i do next?

Ask for a referral to a paediatric respiratory consultant. My daughter has had over 15 hospital admissions in 2 years due to wheezing, lung infections etc requiring heavy dose iv antibiotics, X-rays, nebs, constant oxygen etc. We asked to be referred to an above consultant. She had broncoscopies, scans, PH probes, lavage washings, biopsies. She is pretty much on constant antibiotics, daily inhalers are futile, Montelukast never worked for her. We are not closer to a diagnosis as nothing shows up. But our consultant gives more direct treatment

Why did they give antibiotics for upset tummy? My dd had five courses of antibiotics during the summer, for recurrent ear infection. She's been on a low daily dose since then and has been referred to ent. Is your dd having the same symptoms over and over or is it a new illness each time?

Are the antibiotics always for the same thing?
We had a similar experience when DS was around 18 months. It started with a bad eye infection and in the next 4 months he had 6 lots of antibiotics.
Eye infection, chest infection, urine infection, ear infection x 2 and another eye infection.

It got to the stage where I think the antibiotics were doing more harm than good!!

For us he did grow out of it. At 2 we probably went almost a year without antibiotics and his immune system has really got better.

Obviously keep on pestering dr if you are concerned, especially if the antibiotics are always prescribed for the same thing.

But some children do grow out of it.

Antibiotics are always given for chest infection, she had 3 course one after the other as it wasn't clearing up and its still recurring. Got another appoinment now as her temp is 40 degrees and rising, calpol has been administered and has made no difference. Shes not even crying, just lying on the couch looking out of it. My heart is breakinh for her

hope she’s better today. It is so worrying. It’s all very well a Dr saying their is no need to refer. But they don’t see them when they are sore poorly. And I know from family members how scary asthma can be.

Just keep pushing if you are unhappy. It’s not normal for them to be poorly throughout the summer. That was when my DS has all his antibiotics too. I actually think it may have been triggered by Hayfever as he definitely suffers from it as he’s got older.

I find Calpol can be really slow at bringing down temperatures. It takes at least 1 hour to see a difference with my kids. When temp is very high I always go for Nurofen 1st and then alternate them. It works so much quicker.

Is she on anti iotics?

I would also try neurofen based ones

We ended up seeing the head of the doctors surgery who has told us to hang fire on the antibiotics as her chest wasnt too bad. Hes referred her for a chest xray and blood tests so we're just waiting on the results. However it seems she also has gastro so the poor thing is writhering in pain and refusing food. Feels like i'm at my wits end, i feel useless watching her so miserable

After all the antibiotics my dd had, clarithromycin being the worst, she ended up with a poorly tummy off and on for a while. I gave her some activia, just a few spoons a day for a while and it settled back down.

sleepdeprived17 · 05/12/2018 12:28

I'll give that a try when shes feeling up to it, thanks @bobstersmum
At the minute we're struggling to even get fluids down her, she's just go no interest in food or drink whatsoever

Antibiotics can cause diarrhea in young children so possibly that's what was happening last week and now she is picked up a stomach bug this week plus the chest infections she has not had a break bless her. My ds is also a sickly child and he's now 4, it doesn't get any easier so I hope you get some good results from the xray and blood test op.
