Dd hasn't had chickenpox yet

Dd2 is 4y7m and I'm still "waiting" for her to get it. I know it's worse the older they get and I'm a bit anxious.

DS finally caught it at 5.5 I think

Still time...

Or vaccine

Rubyslippers7780 · 30/11/2018 19:11

My 7 year old has not had it yet...

RiddleyW · 30/11/2018 19:12

Get her vaccinated.

crosser62 · 30/11/2018 19:14

What makes you feel so anxious?

Carina1 · 30/11/2018 19:16

My kids were vaccinated. We lived abroad until last year. 8 months after we came home they both got it- dd was 13 and ds was 10- it was very mild- week off school

housequery · 30/11/2018 19:17

@crosser62 because I know it's much worse for an older child than a toddler.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/11/2018 19:17

dd never caught it, so in her mid teens we vaccinated her.

Phillipa12 · 30/11/2018 19:19

My dad has never had it despite being around 2 siblings, 4dc and 8gc who have all had it. My dc3 and 4 have yet to get it and have been exposed loads.

ems137 · 30/11/2018 19:21

My mum thought I'd never caught it too.

However, I must have done because I was tested for immunity during a pregnancy and was found to be immune. The doctors said I must have had a very mild version with either no spots or just one hidden in my hair or something.

Anyway, why don't you just vaccinate her? My youngest 2 are vaccinated because I just didn't want the worry of when and how bad it might be for them.

ems137 · 30/11/2018 19:21

DH cousin caught it last year at the age of 28

housequery · 30/11/2018 19:22

Dd1 caught it around 2 but she had all of five spots.

I will look into the vaccine for sure. Presumably it's a private option only?

crosser62 · 30/11/2018 19:23

Not necessarily, there are varying degrees of mildness/ severity. Every child is different.
Does your child have any predisposed health issues that could mean that they could be particularly unwell should they get cp?

Chuffles · 30/11/2018 19:27

DS (15) has never had it - or had it so mild we missed it. Asked GP recently if there was any point vaccinating privately. He was ambivalent - not that effective in older kids, apparently. What I really want is to get him tested to see if he has antibodies, but not sure how I'd go about that. So for now I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping he doesn't finally come down with it just before his GCSEs start Confused

cindylouwhooo · 30/11/2018 19:32

I'm 22 and have never had it

Witchend · 30/11/2018 20:47

I caught it aged 20. Despite friends and siblings having it.

ClinkyMonkey · 30/11/2018 21:24

I was 45 when I caught chickenpox! DS1, who was 4 at the time, had it too. We had no more than a dozen spots between us. DS2 was 6 months old and had it a couple of weeks after us. He was covered from head to toe.

NotAQueef · 30/11/2018 21:27

Yes vaccine in UK private only. It’s £130 at Boots (£65 x2 injections)

zsazsajuju · 30/11/2018 21:30

Chicken pox can kill or cause serious disabilities. Its rare of course but why would you risk that. Get the vaccine.

zsazsajuju · 30/11/2018 21:31

See American CDC for stats. In US everyone is vaccinated.

Oysterbabe · 01/12/2018 15:29

Vaccinate her.

mnahmnah · 01/12/2018 20:58

My nearly 7yo has just had it this last week. He wasn’t ill with it at all. No temp. Still eating normally. A slight headache and the spots, which haven’t been itchy, so we haven’t even had the scratching to deal with. It has been hard work though having him cooped up for a week, feeling fine, so full of energy and desperate to go out!

Random18 · 02/12/2018 23:52

We’re still waiting for it here too. My eldest had it at 2 but my youngest is 4 now.
Will ‘possibly’ look into the vaccine but think I would prefer him to catch it naturally - hopefully before he goes to school. His immune system is very good so I have not concerns over chickenpox itself

Haworthia · 02/12/2018 23:55

My DD eventually caught it in Reception.

It’s not necessarily so much worse for an older child than a toddler (toddler DS caught it from DD and was much, much worse). It’s worse for older children as in preteens and teens, arguably, but not Infant school age.

RebeccaWrongDaily · 02/12/2018 23:57

dd is 8.6 and hasn't had it, despite siblings having it. Would you immunise?

YerAuntFanny · 02/12/2018 23:58

DD caught CP in May at 5y2m despite it going round nursery several times beforehand.

She had around 30 spots but never complained of being itchy and wasn't in any way ill so it's not always bad.

The only thing she complained about was not being allowed to nursery!
