Hey guys, my son has an ear infection and was wondering if anyone has any tips to help as hes really suffering and its heartbreaking!

Hes on antibiotics and im alternating calpol and ibuprofen as he seems to be in pain and one doesnt seen to be enough, though im not really happy giving the ibuprofen as hes not really eating.

I work in a pharmacy and should know! But he is my first and its different when you are going though it!

Any tips would be most welcome 😊

You have my sympathy, my dd is a chronic ear infection sufferer and has been since a baby. She has glue ear and ended up with grommets but one has come out and she's now back to having infections in that ear.

In my experience, ibuprofen is much more effective than calpol at relieving the pain and fever, so keep that up even if you drop the calpol. A warm compress on the ear can be soothing.
Keep the ear dry, put cotton wool with some Vaseline on in the ear at bathtimes.
Other than that it's lots of fluids and cuddles. I really hope he feels better soon. If not he might need different antibiotics, some we've had haven't worked at all.

Hi @keepingbees thank you for your reply!

Your poor DD 🙁 i feel for you both! I had terrible ear problems as a child too, i had glue ear and grommets and an ear drum burst, it was fun! So i am really hoping he doesnt take after me!

Thank you for your tips! I feel alot better about the ibuprofen now, he did seem to be better after that dose than the calpol. And the cotton wool is a good tip too! I had just been avoiding bathtime (bad mummy!).

Hes getting so many cuddles its nice and not nice at the same time if that makes sense. Trying my best to get lots of drink into him but if he doesnt want it he wont take it!

Im hoping the antibiotics will start to make a difference soon, they say it gets worse before it gets better!

It won't hurt to avoid bath times until he's better, not a bad mummy at all!

His ear drum might burst, it's happened to my dd so many times Sad you'll know if he suddenly has gunk flowing from it (I'm sure you're familiar with it from your own experiences) the only good thing is they them usually start feeling better once the pressure is gone.

The antibiotics should start to work within 24-48 hours so hopefully he'll be on the mend soon. I agree cuddles are nice but it is horrible seeing them so miserable isn't it.
Hope you both get some rest tonight Thanks

So glad he seems a bit better Smile
Ear infections are the worst because the pain is relentless and there's nothing really you can do for them.
Sorry to hear you're ill too, hope maybe you can get some rest today or your DH take over for a bit.
Never feel you're getting it wrong, you did all you can and gave him comfort and that's exactly what he needed Smile

They really are 🙁 but he is alot better! He and i snuggled on the sofa and had a 4 hour nap?!! Hubby just left us as he said we needed it, did me the world of good!
Awwww thank you keeping 😊
