What's going on with this extra tooth thing in DS's (3yrs) mouth.

He has complained a couple of times about his teeth hurting and has been chewing his hand.

I just noticed tonight as I was brushing his teeth while he was lying down!!

Hopefully it's clear enough on the photo.

Could it be a shark tooth?? Is it possible this is an adult tooth coming through at 3??

I'm a dentist. Pic not clear enough to tell. Does he have all 20 baby teeth through?

HammerHorror · 24/11/2018 19:43

Yes, all 20 teeth are through. It's like an extra tooth slightly medial to the 2nd molar.

The molars have 2 ridges/bumps either side (no idea on dentistry terms), this is like a third ridge.

Is it part of the second molar? Could just be an anatomical variation

HammerHorror · 24/11/2018 19:55

His second molar came through about a year ago. He's had all 20 teeth since around 2 years old.

We went to the dentist about 4 months ago and his teeth all looked normal... I'm pretty sure I would've noticed.

So I think this has popped up quite recently.

I'll obviously make an appointment at the dentist as soon as possible but if it is a shark tooth what will happen? Can these things happen in isolation or will he end up with a mouth full of adult teeth before he's started school?????

Just looks like an anatomical variation on the upper 2nd deciduous molar. Google "cusp of Carabelli". This is like a deciduous equivalent.

HammerHorror · 24/11/2018 23:01

It looks bigger than most of the images on google but definitely a possibility and quite reassuring that he probably isn't getting his permanent teeth at 3!!

I've also been looking up hyperdontia.
