Worried about 10 month old son

This morning, my son has woken up with this strange, blotchy rash all over his body. I’d describe it like blisters, but it’s not really. He’s been whingy and clingy, and went down for his morning nap - usually only sleeps for 25-30 minutes, but he’s still asleep after 2hrs 15 mins. He doesn’t have a fever.

Two weeks ago, he had an odd fever which kept spiking up to 40.3 degrees, which was on/off for three days. Since then he’s had a cold and cough & has been off his food.

I’ve got a GP appointment for 3pm. Any ideas what this could be? Do you think I should wait for the appointment this afternoon, or seek medical advice sooner?

Is he weeing as normal? Eating and drinking? Sounds to me like a viral rash, so if he’s still ok in himself minus being clingy I would think this afternoon will be fine. If he becomes feverish, you can’t wake him, or he stops weeing then more urgent care is needed.

Lovethetimeyouhave · 20/11/2018 11:30

How's his sleeping? Is he fitful or anything... I don't actually have a clue to be honest

Bobbiepin · 20/11/2018 11:31

Have you done the glass test?

FrazzyAndFrumpled · 20/11/2018 11:33

I haven’t done the glass test but it doesn’t look like the type of rash they show for meningitis.

I haven’t tried to wake him... maybe it should? It’s weird that he’s sleeping so long. He drinks his milk but is not really interested in solid food, been like that for a few days.

FrazzyAndFrumpled · 20/11/2018 11:36

Not fitful sleeping, completely still actually. His breathing seemed a bit... ragged?? Earlier, but seems better now (from what I can hear through my own virus-blocked ears)

TeddyIsaHe · 20/11/2018 11:40

Well glass test, attempt to wake would be the first port of call, meningitis rash doesn’t always present the same every time.

Does he have a fast heartbeat or are his hands and feet cold?

FrazzyAndFrumpled · 20/11/2018 11:43

Yes to cold hands, don’t know about heartbeat.

Please see gp or walkin asap. Better to rule out anything more than a typical virus.

Bobbiepin · 20/11/2018 11:57

Do the glass test to rule it out, if for no other reason.

Sounds like chicken pox. Usually begins with runny nose etc. If you watch him, you’ll notice more spots keep appearing. ( if it is chicken pox)
Definately get checked by gp to be in safe side. If it is, warm baths with bicarbonate of soda sprinkled in. Takes itchiness out of spots. Also calamine cream as opposed to lotion is better. The cream is mixed with aqueous so feels much nicer on the skin. I seem to remember chicken pox usually start on back and front then spread over next 10 days.

FrazzyAndFrumpled · 20/11/2018 12:05

Ozzie could be chicken pox! I'm pregnant though, so not great if it is Confused

OP posts:
FrazzyAndFrumpled · 20/11/2018 12:27

I don’t think it is chicken pox. DS woke up himself and the rash seems to have gone down, not quite gone completely but nothing like it was earlier. His hands and feet are cold and a bit blueish though.

Typical, the GP is going to think I’m a time waster.

OP posts:
Rachelover40 · 20/11/2018 12:40

It may well be one of those things that disappears as soon as it appears but please do take him to your GP. They will always fit a baby in as an emergency.

Daffodils07 · 20/11/2018 12:49

Could it be hives? Sometimes after or during a illness you can get them.
Best to get him checked over though.

FrazzyAndFrumpled · 20/11/2018 12:55

I’m relived it doesn’t seem to be anything to worry about, although now feel a little silly. I think I should probably cancel the emergency appointment, they’ll just think I’m ridiculous.

OP posts:
Lumpy76 · 20/11/2018 12:59

Get him checked. The GP won’t think you’re wasting their time. He’s a baby so it’s difficult to really know.

lettuceWrap · 20/11/2018 13:02

Don’t cancel the appointment. The cold hands and feet and the history of a high temperature a few days ago means it’s worth getting someone to check him over properly.

SilverDoe · 20/11/2018 13:05

Don’t cancel the appointment gosh! It sounds an unusual rash and you need to get it checked out especially if his feet are blue

FrazzyAndFrumpled · 20/11/2018 13:30

Ok I won't cancel it Smile just don't want to do the wrong thing!

OP posts:
FrazzyAndFrumpled · 20/11/2018 15:57

The Dr said it seems to be a viral rash, so nothing to worry about Smile

SilverDoe · 21/11/2018 13:24

Good news, hope he feels better soon Halo

Seniorschoolmum · 21/11/2018 13:27

Op, has he had any vaccines in the last week or two. My ds got rubella from his jab. He had temp & rash which disappeared and then came back 48 hours later.

Although sounds more like chicken pox to me. Def both of you see a GP.

FloatingthroughSpace · 22/11/2018 19:08

Bet it's post viral hives. 3 of my kids had this as toddlers. Minor illness followed by dramatic raised welts that appeared and disappeared on various parts of the body over a couple of weeks. Super scary, but basically it's the young immune system getting overexcited and over reacting to the minor illness.

FrazzyAndFrumpled · 22/11/2018 21:15

Yes it does sound like it could be that FloatingthroughSpace, thank you.

Pollaidh · 22/11/2018 21:33

Mine has had post-infection hives too - absolutely massive red, hot, raised patches that appeared and disappeared, popping up on various parts of his body, changing maybe every hour. One hive was so large it covered an entire buttock. GP prescribed antihistamines, and was concerned enough that he banned us from travelling abroad the next day.
