3yo nonstop blocked nose for 12 months

Worriedmum97 · 14/11/2018 20:52

My 3yo has had a constantly blocked nose for the past 12 months. Not a runny one, no itchy or red eyes, no sneezing, just greenish/yellowish discharge when he blowes his nose. He is allergic to dust mites but our doctor doesn’t think that the blocked nose relates to the allergy. Is anyone else in a similar situation or can give some suggestions on what we can do to clear the blocked nose? Many thanks

Foreign body? He's probably pushed something up his nostril (pea, sweet corn, something from a toy, bath sponge etc etc). That's a common cause where only one nostril is blocked.

Has he not been referred for a quick camera by the ent/audiologist? Would tell if any thing stuck or if adenoids blocking.

I'm allergic to dust mites too! along with tree pollen and cat+dog dander

Anyway, I don't suffer from a blocked nose. Just very itchy, rash, swollen, extremely itchy eyes, coughing and sneezing, runny nose if I touch or go near too much dust.

Not normal house dust. I only dust once a week and am fine. I mean proper dust bunny dust.

So unless you're living in squaller which I suspect not, going by my experience alone, I'd assume something else than his allergy.

Use olbas oil in boiling water overnight to see if that helps clear it

We had this with DS, he was a tummy sleeper and I had to change his sheets 3 or 4 times a week because they were permanently crusty.

After 12 months of constant trips to the doctors we managed to get a referral to ENT. It turned out his adenoids were far too big and they way the ENT described it was that he had a permanent pool of water sitting up his nose festering Confused

We hadn't noticed until the specialist pointed out that he was quite "subdued" and after periods of play would just sit quiet. He was essentially getting his breath back.

He was also a mouth breather.

They took his adenoids and tonsils out and he was a different child!

FrangipaniBlue, how old was you child at that time? GP said at the age of 3 they shouldn’t have issues with adenoids

Adenoids.
Totally adenoids, my dd had a green runny nose for 3 years. From age 9 months onwards. They decided once she was 4 they would take out her adenoids (I had to push for ENT referral). She had them out in day surgery 2 weeks after her 4 birthday, been so much better since!

She used to snore a lot, so I took videos (mainly for sound so tephey could hear it)
She would also mouth breathe even at rest, so I took videos of her watching tv where she would mouth breathe and occasionally miss a breath (like apenoa)

Basically keep pushing, get swabs taken, and take as much evidence as possible. My dd napped much longer than her peers, this was because although she never woke up at night her sleep quality wasn't as good. Her energy levels after the surgery were much better. I didn't think her sleep was a problem until I saw the difference.

Keep pushing,,

Sorry please push for an ent audio appointment. Since.I was a kid I had my tonsils and adenoids out because I couldn't breathe with them.

My sister had a sponge stuck up her nose for ages... it was slowly fusing to the bone by the time they found very high up. Similar symptoms.

If anyone is interested. We went to a private pediatric ENT doctor. He looked at DS and prescribed an antibiotic cream for 3 weeks to be applied to DS’s nostrils twice a day and in 24 hours after starting this treatment we can see an improvement. The doctor said that in 9 out of 10 cases this cream will solve the issue.

@Worriedmum97 it started when he was about 18 months, had his tonsils and adenoids removed a week after his 3rd birthday! Smile

Has it worked?
