12 year old vomiting

Ds is 12 years old and has food intolerances to lactose and gluten.

Last Sunday (9 days ago) he came back from his Dad's house saying that he felt under the weather. Since then he has had a fever for a couple of days and has continued to vomit several times a day. He can keep down liquids but attempts at eating solid food results in him being sick.

The practice nurse and GP say that they don't know what's going on and can't predict when he'll get better. They say to feed him liquids and plain foods like crackers. We last saw GP today and they are not concerned about ds as he's not dehydrated. They said maybe his food intolerances mean a weak gut so his body takes longer to recover. They tested his urine with a dip stick but nothing else.

He's now missed 7 days of school. School called me yesterday (6th day of absense) and asked me when he's coming back. I told them that GP can't say. Ds isn't feverish but is vomiting as much as last week. He keeps on trying simple solids like apples and plain toast but his body keeps on rejecting food.

Has anyone heard of anything similar? How do I deal with school starting to get in my back? Ds wants to see his friends and eat normal food.

Hi there. I have no experience with food intolerances, but is he in pain anywhere? Has he ever been like this before, because of food related issues?

Shriek · 14/11/2018 03:50

School..just tell them you will give them weekly updates, and that DC is still vomitting..they won't want him in school!

I wouldnt give him toast if he's gluten intolerant and being sick?!!

Have you tried coconut water?..like the purest you can get, innocent or naked, I can't remember the one that has nothing else in it and not added water.

It will help balance his gut and provide something more nutritious.

Have you ever boiled a chicken carcass for stock. Make this with an organic chicken carcass so you know nothing else is in it.

Then you can add some potatoes and we'll cooked veg.

Small amounts little and often.

Also, buy refrigerated bifidus, and acidofilus, gut bacteria tablets.

Poor lad. Hope he feels better soon.
Keep posting to let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the replies.

His stomach hurts. When he's puked because of his food issues, he's fine within 12 hours.

The toast is made with gluten free bread.

I am going to google the tablets. I'm reluctant to give Actimel/Yakult because of the dairy and they are the only gut bacteria type products that I've heard of.

I have been seriously ill abroad with campylobacter and salmonella..so much fun I can't tell you!...but coconut and gut bacteria got rid.
To prove it you have to supply 'samples' for checking before and after treatment and without any ABs, well it worked. So great believer in it

Update: He's having a diabetes fasting test on Thursday. He's only being sick a couple of times a day now which is an improvement but he is very tired, has headaches and drinking more. On a finger prick test he got an 8 which isn't diabetes level but higher than expected for someone who'd only had a bottle of lucozade sport within the last 12+ hours.

Oh ghost I do hope not. Fingers crossed. He's being looked after and symptoms being investigated.

Hope you're OK.

cakeandteajustforme · 18/11/2018 13:40

You can get non dairy probiotics... I think some of the coconut/almond yoghurts have them included in there?

cakeandteajustforme · 18/11/2018 13:43

Ah i searches for vegan probiotic on my Ocado and a bunch came up. Not yoghurts but similar. Might work?

If this comes back negative and he continued to be unwell with headaches, sickness, lethargy - I'd ask for a brain scan.

Hoping he can shake this off and feel completely back to normal asap op. It's horrible.

t1mum3 · 21/11/2018 09:43

@ghostandghoulies - a fasting test is not a good test for type one diabetes (as the pancreas can still work over night). It's much better to test after a large amount of carbs. GPs are used to diagnosing Type 2 diabetes which is why they refer for fasting tests but it's not correct for type one.

ghostsandghoulies · 21/11/2018 12:16

Is it a1c that I need to ask for? He had a urine test with tested negative.

Random glucose about an hour after food is recommended (hba1c measures past three months). Good that the urine was clear. Tbh vomiting at diagnosis in T1D is usually a medical emergency combined with v high blood glucose, but it doesn't sound like the scenario here. Ie I expect they tested to rule out diabetic ketoacidosis and are just following up because the fingerpick test was mildly elevated.
