How long for fever/meningitis checks at hospital?

Hi everyone, a quick question I can't find an answer to!

DH has taken DC2 to the kids hospital with meningitis like symptoms. DC is one of twins and so I'm at home with DCs 1 and 3.

Does anyone know how long this will take roughly? DHs phone is just about to run out of battery so I can't stay in touch :(

Oh what a worry for you all Sad
What were the symptoms?
Depending on symptoms they may decide it's viral and happy to send home but I'd imagine they will want to monitor to be sure

Dd2 recently went to hospital for suspected appenditicitis and we were at hospital about 3 -4 hours while they checked her over and got surgeon to come and take a look. We couldn't leave until she had been for a wee which took ages to convince her to go!

If they feel it's meningitis there will possibly be a lumbar puncture to to confirm and IV antibiotics administered. It's like that they'll have a stay in hospital and be monitored.

I really hope your DC is ok

My dd was in a&e for what looked like meningitis. Fever, sore neck, rash, couldn’t walk straight, sore eyes etc. She was back home 1.5 hours later as they said it was just a virus mimicking it. I was at home with baby pacing the floor.

Hope you hear good new soon.

Putting DC1 to bed, but fever of 39.5, lack of appetite, cold hands and feet and slightly swollen fontanelle. Not sure how bad that seems, just so worried.

Sorry does your DH have one DC with meningitis at hospital and you're at home with other DC with those symptoms you've just mentioned and you're putting them to bed?

YouBoggleMyMind · 29/10/2018 21:05

Sorry, I think you mean you're now putting DC1 to bed and you've listed the symptoms of other DC. Sorry!
Your DH and DC are in the right place to be looked after, fingers crossed it isn't anything serious.

Hi OP,

If the doctors in A&E are satisfied that it is not meningitis from clinical assessment it will take up to a few hours.
If they have any suspicion of meningitis they will admit her for blood cultures, a lumbar puncture (a little needle into the spinal canal to collect some fluid) and IV antibiotics and will likely want to keep her in until all the culture results are back (takes 48 hours from arrival at the lab) and have excluded bacterial meningitis/HSV encephalitis.
Of course if any of the microbiology/virology is positive she could have a more prolonged admission (up to 2-3 weeks) to complete a course of treatment.

Try not to worry too much. Hospitals are (appropriately) over-cautious with little ones, and will frequently admit well babies even just on the basis of a patient feeling they are 'not right'. Nobody wants to miss something significant in a little one of that age.

What @pbdr said and horribly familiar too

Quartz2208 · 29/10/2018 21:16

The symptoms would be enough to prompt a sepsis check (as those symptoms are of sepsis) and if that is suspected would start IV antibiotics then they would see what caused it.

For DS it was scarlet fever that caused it

ScreamingBird · 29/10/2018 21:34

Thanks everyone. I just hope DH will call soon :(
