Montelukast toddler

My 2yo dd has been prescribed montelukast, she does suffer with a terrible wheeze when she gets a cold, but I'm not convinced she needs this.
Every winter so far has been awful, broncilitiois when small , hospitalised and on oxygen, she has inhalers(which work!) and is absolutely perfect in the summer, no cough, no eczema.
Both have come with a vengeance since September.
Any advice or experience???

My daughter has been on and off it since 18 months (now 4) and it dramatically improves things. I would say halves her overnight symptoms. Her consultant told us it was also good for hayfever, so if there’s a suggestion of an atopic trigger (such as the eczema you mentioned) would try it. We had zero side effects.

Montelukast didn't work for my daughter, her symptoms were exactly the same. What did work was getting the brown preventer inhaler. 6 weeks after starting it she got her first cold in which didn't result in a hospital admission in nearly a year. A year on from that she no longer wheezes at all with a cold.

I would definitely be open to trying it if I were you, it's mostly a case of trial and error finding out what works best.

If she’s sucking in at the ribs or neck, please don’t wait around here for answers regarding medication. Please call an ambulance!!

Thanks everyone! Just to be clear, she is not struggling to breathe at the moment, when she does, she goes straight to a&e or gp depending on the time of day.
My post was to find out how montelukast effects your children as I've heard some really horror stories .

But that's the point, the Montelukast assuming it works will prevent or at least reduce the A&E and GP trips. Give it a try for a couple of months. My daughter's had no noticeable side effects and it has dramatically improved her quality of life. I also suffer extreme anxiety and so there's a chance my daughter could be predisposed but she hasn't shown any ill effects. Our Consultant is much more concerned about the side effects from oral steroids than she is Montelukast, in fact that's her overall aim, to remove/reduce the need for steroids. Since being on Montelukast we have also been able to reduce the strength of my daughter's brown inhaler too, so she's now on a low maintenance dose.

Awful sispde effects on my nephew. He was on it for 6 months and was having fits/ absences and blue lighted into hospital twice. Finally a Paeds consultant worked out it was the Montelukast and he was taken off it. No issues since. It was terrifying. It caused his heart to slow down so much it almost stopped multiple times and turned him into a zombie who had no energy/ appetite and also stunted his growth and development
