Unsure about calpol help!

Hi just wanted some clarity on the following - my DS has been poorly for a couple of days now.

He's been having calpol fairly regularly every 4-6 hours for almost 24 hours, as I can tell when the last dose is 'running out' of that makes sense, as he seems to go downhill, becomes very sad and clingy and looks worse.

I noticed on the bottle it says don't give more than 4 doses in 24 hours - if he has one tonight that'll be the 4th, can I not give him any more if he needs it in the morning?

It doesn't seem to need a doctors appointment, I think it's a general cold & cough albeit a nasty one, he's VERY snotty and coughing all the time and has been very sleepy and cuddle today.

Any ideas please??

He definitely can’t have more than 4 doses in 24 hours, so if he has some tonight and that’s his 4th dose he can’t have anymore until at least 24 hours after his first dose, and he careful to space them all so there’s never more than 4 doses in any one 24 hour period.
You can alternate with ibruprofen though.

SpottingTheZebras · 25/10/2018 17:28

How old is he? Can you alternate doses with ibuprofen if he needs a painkiller or something to bring down his temperature?

IwillrunIwillfly · 25/10/2018 17:29

Yes it mean you can't give him another does until after he had his first dose this morning. So if you have him a dose at 8am, then doses at 12, 4 and 8pm, he couldn't have his next lot until 8am the next morning. You could give him ibuprofen if you think he's sore in the meantime though.

chickeletta · 25/10/2018 17:34

Oh ok I get it. So he had a dose at 6:30am.... then 10:30 then 2:30 so he can have one at 6:30/7 ish so no more overnight but he can have more from 6:30/7ish am tomorrow??

He is almost 2.... I only have calpol and some other kind of baby nurofen?

tbh, as long as dc is not in pain I would not give calpol.
a cold is uncomfortable, but rest and a fever are the immune system fighting the infection.
I would possibly give paracetamol or ibuprofen before bedtime for a better sleep, but resting is a good thing imo. and there is definitly nothing wrong with cuddles.

badg3r · 25/10/2018 17:37

You can give calpol and baby nurofen alternately but no more than four doses of calpol per 24h period as others have said.

chickeletta · 25/10/2018 17:41

@redsummershoes that's fair enough. He has had lots of cuddles today too bless him. I think his throat is Defo sore because of his cough and he just looks so rough... he's drank lots tho so at least that's something but hasn't eaten properly since Monday... hopefully tonight/tomorrow will be better for him

My daughter is ill too with a horrible ear and throat infection. I’ve been alternating infant paracetamol (shop own brand as cheaper than calpol) with ibuprofen so that we never go over the four doses.

chickeletta · 25/10/2018 19:20

@ThatGirl82 it's horrible isn't it. I'm hoping DSs is not an infection, he is sticking his fingers in his ears a little bit not loads and I just figured it was related to his cold!

Ironically he seems to have livened up the past 30/40 mins or so, he was asleep this afternoon from about 3:30-5ish cause he just couldn't stay awake his poor puffy little eyes! But now it's almost actually time for bed he's eating to go 😂😂

Will try to avoid calpol atm if he's coping ok in case he needs some in the night!

Calpol and baby nurofen on the same day if very poorly is ok
