Injured foot, likely to be serious?

My ds was playing football yesterday and accidentally kicked a tree stump with the top of his foot instead of the ball with force. Since then he can't put weight on it and he is in pain when he tries to stand up. His foot is swollen all over the top and by his ankle/round to the side, with a lump underneath the swelling in the centre of the top of his foot which is hot to touch.

Does anyone have any experience as to what he might have done to it or if it's likely to be something minor so I can rule out a fracture etc. We are putting ice on it and resting in but any other ideas would be great.

I'm currently trying to find out if there's a walk in centre anywhere nearby as we won't be able to get a gp appointment for a few days but if anyone has any advice in the meantime that would be great. (I don't want to ring 111 for a few reasons).

Tbh, I would take him to A&E. He could easily have broken a bone in his foot and the only way to tell is with an X-ray.

I can't believe you've not taken him already actually.

Sorry but walk in centre or gp appointment is your best bet. If it's swollen the day after and really painful you should get it check out. My husband did something similar and it turned out to be just soft tissue damage. The walk in centre didn't have an x-ray and they sent him to the hospital to have one.

Ok I will take him to a and e, I'm taking my partner to a hospital appointment shortly so il go to a and e with ds. I didn't want to over react or waste a and e time if it was only likely to be minor.
I've had no experience with broken bones and wasn't sure what the best way forward was hence posting.
Where I live we only have an option of gp but not same day or travel to the nearest hospital so I was just trying to see if I could locate a walk in in the meantime.
Thank you so much for the help.

Best to get him checked... they won't think you are wasting time.
Hope he is ok

Sounds like you're doing the right thing. I'm lucky where I live. It's rural but we have a few walk in centres within driving distance.Take lots of change! Fingers crosses it's nothing. :)

Glad your taking him.

I'm more of a "let's see" parent (and with rugby playing DS's there's been a lot of that!) and I've never been dismissed as a time waster when I have resorted to taking them to A&E. Usually it's turned out to be minor but most times they've had to X-ray to be sure.

Hope it turns out to be minor!

They x-rayed it and it's fine just really bruised.

That's a relief!
