Rash on baby

babyrash · 21/10/2018 16:20

On holiday with DS (5 months) and he's had a rash now since yesterday morning (pictured).

Waiting to see Dr but wondered if anyone had any experience of similar whilst we wait? He's happy and taking his milk as usual but obviously the rash is a concern for us.

Does it feel rough like sandpaper? Ds's eczema looked like that when he was a baby.

babyrash · 21/10/2018 16:27

No, it's not rough. Skin still feels smooth but just small raised spots all over really

Does he seem to be itching it? I guess it could still be eczema, or a reaction to something, maybe a bath product or food. If he's been ill recently it could also be a post-viral rash, but when mine have had those they've looked different to that. I imagine no two viral rashes are the same though.

Still, it does look strikingly similar to ds's eczema... Glad to hear he's totally well in himself though, that's the most important thing with a rash. Kids get rashes far more frequently than adults so try not to worry too much if he's well. It is scary though!

babyrash · 21/10/2018 16:50

Thank you, I know I'm glad he seems ok just always worry don't you.

It looks like prickly heat or a heat rash so I've got him just in his nappy in the room with air-con while we wait to see if that helps. He's not on any solids so can't think of anything we've done differently that would cause a reaction. Fingers crossed it goes soon.

How is little one OP? Did you see a DR?

babyrash · 21/10/2018 21:28

The first person said they didn't think it was heat and more likely a reaction to something but no idea what given he's just on milk and we've not changed that.

They sent us elsewhere and they think it is heat so we got a cream to use twice a day and a new sun cream. Although we're planning just to have him inside and cool anyway but cream good for the unavoidable walk to shops etc (we have DS 4 too)

He's still happy though so that's the main thing. I'd just be more comfortable if there'd been a consensus on what it was.

I am far from a Dr, but I have experience if 3 kids with lots of minor and serious rashes.
I always take mine to Dr with most rashes. Especially at that age.
However, i would have said 1 of 3 things as a gut reaction.
1st being sweat rash. Where are you on holiday? (Obviously don't out yourself, but is baby particularly sweaty)
2nd being allergy. HAve bottles been cleaned with different washing up liquid, sterilising tablets, could it be the bedsheets they have used. If breastfed, have you changed your diet
3, has he recently been unwell, talking 1-2 weeks ago. A cold? My DD always gets a rash after a cold.

I hope the rash clears up and he remains happy.

babyrash · 21/10/2018 21:57

We're in one of the Canary Islands so, yes, much warmer than he's used to in Scotland! That was my gut reaction but just nice to have it confirmed I suppose.

No changes to bottles. I brought ready made cow and gate and I brought our steam steriliser with us so no changes there either.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Glad your gut reaction is the same. We now have vague memories of DS1 having similar. I think I've been so worried about keeping him covered so as not to burn that he's maybe been too hot 😢

It's finding the balance isn't it.
Lots of fluids for him to keep him cool.
I have done the same with mine, covering them up so much they sweat buckets. I just get so scared getting sunburn.
Please try to have a nice time for the rest of your holiday!

(Little bit jealous )

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 24/10/2018 07:21

Hey, How is baby doing? Has his rash gone?

babyrash · 24/10/2018 15:29

Thanks for asking g. We're home but still has the rash so had him at our GP who thinks it's just a reaction to something so have us another cream but he wasn't worried about it thankfully

@RatUnholyRolyPoly

The initial suggestions from doctors took me away from eczema but as it's not shifting I had a look and it does look very similar to pictures of baby eczema. We've been given zerobase to use. Do you mind me asking if your DS still suffers with this? DS doesn't seem to be itchy but dear God he screams when I put the cream on 😢

Hey babyrash, no, ds's eczema is gone now (he's 3). Actually it cleared up when we realised he had developed various food allergies (at first dairy and egg, soya 6 months later and wheat a year after that) so we cut those out and it went away. He's grown out of all those allergies now though, thankfully!

babyrash · 25/10/2018 08:44

That's good to know, thank you.

I think his face looks worse now, really red and bumpy round his eyes. Horrible when they're so wee and can't tell you anything.

Please try "childs farm" bath stuff and baby lotion....

If eczema , it will help

madmum5811 · 26/10/2018 23:23

Has baby been in the water?

Just wanted to check in and thank everyone for suggestions etc.

Not long after getting home it flared up and felt like sandpaper. His ears and face were also really, really dry and cracked so it appears to have been eczema. Very shocked as the initial rash really didn't suggest that to me at all.

Thank you for the child's farm recommendation. We've been using the oil and he looks a million times better already.
