Uncontrolled eye movements and behind in physical development in 12m old

Hi, I was hoping for a little help and advice regarding my daughter, she is 1 in 2 weeks time but we have a few concerns regarding her development.

She has never rolled over fully, she will only roll half way but she keeps her legs like she’s in an L shape so it stops her goings right over.

When we do tummy time with her she has a little bit of a little look around but then gives up pretty quick then she will just lay her head on the floor until we pick her up. She doesn’t attempt to use her arms to push up and if her arms are under her body, she doesn’t try to get them from under her.

The odd thing is, even from birth she seemed very strong, the force of her neck and head would be really powerful, maybe she’s just not got the strength in her stomach.

She sat up pretty late as well at around 9-10 months, she still needs cushions around her though as she’s not 100% steady and will fall from time to time, she also doesn’t try to stop herself falling, she doesn't put her hand out and when she does fall she stays in the position she’s fell in and doesn’t attempt to move.

She doesn't bum shuffle and has never tried; she’s also has never tried to crawl.

When we stand her up hold her, she doesn’t seem to take her weight properly through her legs, there’s been a few times I’ve had her stand against furniture but she does loose the strength fairly quick.

We had the 12 month review from the HV a few weeks ago and she said she seemed to be meeting most goals for other things but did agree that she seemed a little behind with her mobility.
The HV referred her to see a physio but said she wasn't overly concerned about it.

When we seen the physio it was only a short appt, but she assessed her on the floor sitting and putting toys a little away from her to see how she would try to get them, unfortunately she didn't really try much and was getting a little upset at the time, but the physio did spot something while she was trying it and said the she has got a little bit of a tremor when she was moving, she said this may turn out to be nothing and hopefully not but she wants to keep an eye on it in case its something like ataxia.

We are due to see the physio again in a few weeks for a longer appt.

For a while the baby has also had what seems like uncontrolled eye movement, she will be moving her head around, sometimes quick and she looks like she is looking in different directions and her eyes seem to roll back and she looks like she’s not got control of them, usually we will call her name and she will stop after a bit then seem ok.
We didn't mention this to the physio at the time but does seem to be doing it a little more recently.

We have mentioned it in talking to a nurse at our GP's and also when we took her to A&E one time for something unrelated, both said to keep an eye on it but they didn't appear to be worried, the Dr in A&E seen her briefly do it and he said he got the impression it may be sensory as she seemed to be looking at things at the time. He was happy at the time that we were able to stop her and he felt this meant it wasn’t seizure related but to keep an eye on it.

We are going to ask our GP about getting a referral to a paediatrician regarding this to make sure there’s nothing wrong as she appears to be doing it more recently.

We are just a little worried in general there may be something amiss and if we should be as concerned as we are about it all. In general she is a very happy baby and is very laid back, we did think she might be a little lazy, but had hoped she would catch up, but up to now doesn’t seem to be.

Any advice would be much appreciated

Regards

James

My daughter was a late roller and referred to physio, but she got there in the end. It sounds like you have the right referrals going on to investigate. Good she has no other concerns re development. Mine had issues with food also and refused it for many months. Is she self feeding?

jamesuk · 18/10/2018 21:04

She can manage bigger finger foods well, she can't feed herself with a spoon but can hold the spoon with our help and will guide it to her mouth.

Try to video anything that you want to show, much easier than explaining.

jamesuk · 19/10/2018 13:42

What else could the eye issue be if nothing serious, do babies sometimes just do this, can it be normal?

In all honesty I would be worried, video everything that gives you second thoughts and ask for a paediatric review.

MrsMaisel · 20/10/2018 09:19

Speaking to a physio, a nurse at the GP and mentioning a problem at a random visit to A&E is not going to get your baby the medical attention they need. Could possibly be nystagmus? Which has different causes. Agree you should video & go for a paediatric review - ophthalmologist would also be on my to do list.

Paradyning · 21/10/2018 10:46

Are the eye rolls up and down? Could be seizure related. Or side to side, which would more likely be nystagmus. Either way you need to ask either for ophthalmology or neuro referral in a decent tertiary children's hospital.
I don't mean to be a harbinger of doom but bitter experience has shown that things like this could be down to an as yet undiagnosed genetic condition. Do not be fobbed off and make the experts listen to you and rule everything out.

Doesn't sound like Infantile spasms but it may be worth watching his video to rule them out.

Hi, the eye rolls are usually always upwards, we have an appointment with the gp on the 30th of this month, there wasn't any sooner unfortunately

Phone them tomorrow and ask for an emergency appt. say you suspect seizures linked to the developmental delay. They really should be referring you to neuro ASAP.

cestlavielife · 21/10/2018 22:20

Needs full paediatrician review
Paed can refer to paediatric neurologist
Full opthamology review

cestlavielife · 21/10/2018 22:35

If you having to wait a while thru nhs fir paedoatrcian then you might want to pay for a private paediatrician appointment to get an opinion ...look for a developmental paediatrician . You can then take that report to push things with nhs. I would be concerned something is being missed and you don't want seizures to go untreated...also you want to know if it isn't seizures then what is it and what therapies might help. Definitely a full review with paediatric opthamologist to check vision and eye movements this is usually at the local hospital.
