Laryngomalacia (Floppy Larynx)

Does anyone have experience with this? My GP has said that my DSs exceptionally noisy breathing is caused by this condition. He sounds excessively loud when he has a bottle (he could never stay latched to the breast and the GP said it's because babies with this condition struggle with the deeper BF latch) and also when he sleeps at night. Sometimes in the day to but it's not as bad in the daytime.

He's also starting to show some of the signs of silent reflux, which his elder sister had terribly to the point of hospitalisation as a small baby. I understand that the conditions can be linked?

He's six weeks old.

Honestly it sounds like he's going to stop breathing constantly at night. It's terrifying. The doctors says he's perfectly healthy and that he'll grow out of it. So just looking for some actual parenting experiences of it if anyone has any?

Thanks.

Mine grew out of his by about 6 months, was extremely noisy until then. He was a very vomity baby, slow weight gain, shit sleeper (although fairly happy) but I'm not sure if that was the floppy layrnx or his undiagnosed allergies

My son had this. It was so incredibly noisy and his latch was pretty terrible. He still managed to get enough milk and put on loads of weight though! Honestly he grew out of it by 3 or 4 months if I remember correctly.
It sounds much worse than it is, try not to worry. It’s very rarely a serious problem and it won’t be forever!

Thanks for replying! Luckily weight gain doesn't seem to be an issue, baby hee-haws so so loudly when eating but seems to be getting plenty. He sounds like a donkey! He does guzzle though which makes me wary of silent reflux. My eldest didn't do that she was a feed refuser, so not sure.

Honestly he's so loud I can hear him feed and sleep if DH has him downstairs and I'm upstairs.

It's the hitching that scares me, it sounds like he's going to stop breathing all the time at night. Keeps me awake all night long.

Mine had it and ended up in hospital thanks to a croup flare up making it worse. Also had reflux. He ended up having a camera down his throat under GA where they found a small growth which was lasered off. He had lanzoprazole for the reflux. He was over it by 18 months old. If you are worried then ask for an ENT referral.

We've got an ENT appointment but they can't see us until December.

It's so odd how sometimes it's worse than others. It's not too bad in the day apart from when eating but at night it's dreadful!

DS had tracheomalacia (floppy airway). I used an angel care pressure monitor in his cot that would alarm if he stopped breathing to keep me sane! Weight gain was a problem as he was using a lot of energy to breathe. Choking was also an issue so care (and a blender) was needed for feeding until he was 2 then he grew out of it. I think Lilly Allen has a child with laryngomalacia.

Oh and croup, every, single, year. Until this one, hoorah! It does get easier, there are some helpful groups on Facebook.
