Anyone had similar? How long off school and symptom watching?

Happened Friday, caused him to lose consciousness briefly. Hospital deemed it as minor as an hour later he was ok apart from a little unsteady and sore head.

We’re on day 3 now and he’s been quiet but fine, I’ve kept off school today with the idea he’ll go back tomorrow. Spoken to GP this p.m as he vomited and he’s said to use instinct if very unwell to take up to a&e, he also said he could probably do with more time off.

When would you send back to school? How long am I going to be on edge? A relative had a skull fracture and brain bleed from a ‘minor’ knock to the head, so I guess I’m a little wary.

A vomit on day three? Yuo should take him down to A&E.

Have to agree with that! Vomiting this late would make me very worried, vision blurry? (worried about skull fracture look for clear fluid in ears).

That’s why I called the GP. He said as it’s just the once and he’s otherwise fine then I should just keep an eye on him? Was just a mouthful for context - not the exorcist scene or anything. No fluid or blurry vision.

Just mouthful, okay keep a close eye on. I was thinking a full heave and vomit. How old? Certain no blurred vision? Fluid in ears was unlikely but a good way to check for skull fractures. Eyes able to follow TOGETHER at the same rate, a finger moving from nose to extreme right, centre and extreme left? Eyes both dilate and constrict when a light is shined on them? No pain from the light? If all okay then just keep keeping an eye on things but likely ok. Any of those tests not okay, then A&E.

Confused sorry just saw DC is 11. Reading is okay? Best way to check for blurred vision.

ImNotCrying · 08/10/2018 16:36

Thanks - my gut tells me he’s fine, just not sure how long I should be cautious.

He’s just bounced downstairs for his dinner so I’ll do the checks when he’s done, but I’m sure he’ll pass them all. Glad he’s old enough to be aware about symptoms etc so he’s been told several times to tell me if anything changes.

Sounds all good but kids can cause us to worry! Best of luck and hope all concludes well!

THEsonofaBITCH · 08/10/2018 16:56

3 days without real symptoms I think you're good, for what my opinion is worth (SaR specialist so more than some but less than others).

ImNotCrying · 08/10/2018 17:00

Cheers, I was thinking we were high and dry now bu the sickness made me wobble.

He’s passed all the tests and is now getting annoyed I keep bugging him Blush.

Would you keep off school for a while longer or no need? This is last week of school before October break. I’ve messaged his teacher to make her aware and have said no PE this week....

No need at this point unless suddenly developed symptom which is HIGHLY UNLIKELY so I think back to normal!!

THEsonofaBITCH · 08/10/2018 17:03

You are the parent on scene so go with your gut but I think even PE is okay now unless they are doing something where there is a likelihood of his head getting injured again.

DS (15) had a bad concussion a few weeks ago. Blow to the head on Thursday evening, blurred vision, vomiting (repeatedly and spectacularly), confusion (he didn't know who I was or where we were) etc. No loss of consciousness though. He stayed in overnight after a brain scan and was sent home Friday lunchtime. I watched him like a hawk all weekend and he went back to school on the Monday but missed PE at our request.

Like your ds, the greatest reaction to all my 'testing' was eye rolling and sighs - which I deemed a very positive sign form a 15 year old! No ill effects (I am still asking) now 3 weeks down the line. He is disappointed that he has zero recollection of that night he's lost approximately 4 hours completely and the time either side is a bit hazy too!

It was really obvious with ds when it was going wrong - after the initial incident he was ok but an hour later it was clearly going horribly wrong! I hope your ds continues to feel better and the eye rolling and huffing ease your worries Smile

Thanks THEson I’ll see how he sleeps tonight I guess.

That’s scary Phanny - with mine it was instant memory loss he kept asking what had happened and I kept repeating until about half an hour later then he started retaining he info. He can’t remember it happening or the ride to hospital but that’s about it. Thought he was having me on at first!

I can laugh about it now and like you, thought he was taking the piss for a bit. But crikey I aged that night!

I'm sure your boy will be fine but really do understand that 'but what if?' thing. Unmumsnetty hugs to you Flowers
