Breaking the 48 hour rule 😩

So DS is 7. He’s had his fair share of bugs probably due to the parents who send their little ones too soon after having a bug. I have always stuck to the 48 hour rule.. until tomorrow..

He was last sick at noon yesterday so technically 48 hours is tomorrow lunchtime so going back to school tomorrow would be slightly too early. However, DD has a hospital appointment tomorrow that we have been waiting weeks for (desperately hoping that neither her or me will get the bug. I’ve been scrubbing hands and bleaching everything).

Would it be okay to send him in the morning. Usually I would never do this but he’s back to his normal bouncy self. Would a few hours make a real difference?

You'll be fiiiine

tootstastic · 07/10/2018 20:50

I would

Owletterocks · 07/10/2018 20:50

I would for the sake of 3 hours! He is practically 48 hours symptom free so should be fine. As long as he doesn’t show any symptoms over night obviously

Wolfiefan · 07/10/2018 20:51

I wouldn’t. And if you get to the appointment and get a call that’s he’s thrown up?

YumLemonCheesecake · 07/10/2018 20:52

I would

Stormwhale · 07/10/2018 20:53

Why don't you just take ds to the appointment with you?

georgedawes · 07/10/2018 20:56

I would too.

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 07/10/2018 20:56

stormwhale, so better to take him to a hospital if he has a bug??

But I think for the sake of 3 hours, I would assume he is no longer contagious.

Wolfiefan · 07/10/2018 20:58

So he’s well enough to go to school but not well enough to go to the appointment? It can’t be both.

MyGirlDaisy · 07/10/2018 20:58

Could somebody stay with your DS whilst you take DD to her appointment? Is her appointment in the morning? Is it possible to drop him at school a bit later? I am a stickler for the 48 hour rule but understand you need to get your DD to her appointment it’s a tricky one and I hope you can sort something out.

Stormwhale · 07/10/2018 20:58

Cake I'm going to admit I had a rather dim moment then. I'm going to blame pregnancy hormones and walk away hanging my head. Blush

formerbabe · 07/10/2018 21:02

I'd send him in.

ThrowThoseCurtainsWide · 07/10/2018 21:05

I always take the 48hr rule as 2 days so I would send him in. Saying that it really does depend on why he was sick. Do you think it was a bug this time or a reaction to something he'd eaten?

I sent DS to school on Monday after he'd thrown up on the Sunday afternoon as he ate far too much processed crap whist we were out (he was warned!). 10mins after being sick he was back to his normal self and complaining he was hungry

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 07/10/2018 21:05

Some schools only have a 24hr rule. For me it would depend if it was an isolated event so less likely to be stomach bug or actual d&v.

Passmethecrisps · 07/10/2018 21:08

You have my sympathy if nothing else op. Both my girls have been hit by the mist irritating sick bug which has essentially caused one sick ever 24 hours for a week. Not particularly unwell in between but each one sets us two days behind again. Torturous

Passmethecrisps · 07/10/2018 21:10

Obviously I am glad my girls aren’t more ill just in case that wasn’t clear.

For example little one was sick through the night early hours of Saturday. Nothing yesterday during the day but then today at lunch she was sick again. Like you op I don’t want to make anyone sick but it is so hard to know when it is all over

JKCR2017 · 07/10/2018 21:11

It was definitely a bug. He only vomited 4 times but he was pretty poorly. He got better in himself by yesterday evening and back to his usual bouncy self today. Been for a long walk at our local beach where he couldn’t spread his germs. Pretty certain he will not be sick again after seeing the amount he’s eaten today 😂 although Oh only works 10 mins away so could get away if he was poorly at school.

Oh is considering going sick to either take DD or stay home with DS.

Taking DS to a hospital wouldn’t be the best option at the best of times. He has asd and an potentially hour long appointment wouldn’t be ideal 😩

Send him to school. The likelihood is he is better and even if not, he is likely to be around more vigorous people than in a hospital.

In an ideal world it wouldn’t be an issue but you have to make a choice

stoplickingthetelly · 07/10/2018 21:19

I'd send him. It'll be fine.

Lougle · 08/10/2018 12:11

I would send him if the difference is 45 hours rather than 48 hours. If it was 36 hours vs 48 hours I'd say you need to find a different solution, but 45 Vs 48 is just semantics, IMO.
