After reading about little Alfie who died of this virus after only going to school for 1 day Sad I have decided to get my son vaccinated privately. I am awaiting a phone call from my doctors to discuss prices, dates etc. My son missed about by about 12 months for this vaccine but I am prepared to pay the small price that could protect him. Has anyone got any advice/experience with this vaccine.

Not all GP practice offer this vaccine so we had ours at the boots. It’s no different than what you did for other vaccinations like calpol for pain. 2nd dose is given 8 weeks after the first so remember to book an appointment before you leave your gp practice for 2 nd dose.

I've just been looking at Boots its £220 for both doses. I will see what my GP can do as the last time we spoke (18months ago) they told me a lot more money something like £375.

Thanks, you hear lots of different things all the time but I'd rather him have a temp than meningitis obviously.

My ds also missed out by 12 months on this vaccine and we paid privately last year for it at a local private hospital, he had absolutely no adverse reaction to either jab, we gave calpol immediately after for pain and he did complain of a sore arm for about 24-48 hours but nothing some toys couldn't distract from. Absolutely worth it in my mind, when I read the article and saw he was the same age as my son as missed out by the same time frame I was so f'ing relieved I'd went and done it private.

I've booked him in for next Friday, paid £240 at the doctors but yes totally worth it. I'm just thankful I can afford it, others can't and it's a huge worry. The story of that poor boy Alfie has really hit me, the fact he only managed 1 day at school absolutely crushes me.

We paid for it privately when it first came out, our ds was about 7 at the time. It’s a painful one so we gave Calpol straight after and had a bar of chocolate on hand! Worth every penny and so glad we did it.

I had ds1 done last year at Boots. He was 3 then. He hated it and his arm ached for a few days after. But no other effects.

It's certainly gone down quite a lot I had mine done privately at boots and came to £750 for everything.

Best money I ever spent

marvelmum · 04/10/2018 22:37

Wow madjess £750 why so expensive, how long ago was that?

I got my son vaccinated yesterday and they gave him it in his leg, since last night he's been struggling to walk as his leg is so sore. Apart from this no other reactions, no fever and still has his huge appetite but poor little thing he's limping and it's hurting so bad. I've given him nurofen for the pain. Has anyone experienced this in there little one?

Yep we got our DS done privately, he couldn’t move his arm for a week! Worth it though and no lasting effects.
