Almost 9 year old son and tight foreskin....

Hi

My almost 9 year old son has had a sore and slightly swollen willy since Sunday.

Took him to the GP this morning and she said his foreskin is tight and doesnt retract.

She has given us cream and he has to try to pull it back gently himself.

We have to go back in a month and if no better she will refer us to surgeon.

His willy does balloon when he wees too.

She spoke about a partial circumcision? I think?

Does anyone know if the cream will work and where to put the cream? I think it thins the skin? Does it go on his foreskin or on his willy when he tries to pull the skin back. I forgot what she said.....

Does anyone know how long a circumcision takes and if it is a general or local anaesthetic?

Thank you xx

DS (11) is similar, but no infections.

Consultant urologist at GOSH said to leave it. His view was that erections at puberty would resolve the issue without circumcision. I’d guess your ds would need to be examined by a doctor to determine the seriousness.

Hi

I have been googling on the subject and there is so much confliction on the subject!

Just to clarify commander .... if you read my post properly, it wasn’t a friend of a friend .... it was our GP’s brother who is the urology consultant/surgeon. This advice came directly from medical professionals.

As other posters have said on here, some boys seem to be fine after going through puberty ... this obviously doesn’t mean all boys will be like this.

This board is for opinions/personal experience etc .... everyone is giving factual information of their own experience. My experience with both my boys has been the same. Their foreskins were very tight and couldn’t be retracted at all. We chose not to try stretching the foreskin as this just seems barbaric and extremely painful.

As I said previously, it’s annoying and very unhelpful when professionals in the same field give complete opposite advice .... how do we know who to believe? Surely, all professionals have had the same training, follow the same guidelines, have access to the same results/findings etc? It’s just awful to get such conflicting information when all we want is the best thing for our dc.

DS1, 10, has some ballooning and can’t retract his foreskin. However he’s never had any infections or issues going to the loo or pain so advice for us has been to leave it as the likelihood is it will resolve during puberty.

Hi

I have an update.

We've been putting the cream on every night and my son has pulled the foreskin back as far as he can.

Tonight he showed me and the "head" bit popped out!

It seems to be working so far.

How far is the foreskin supposesd to go back?

Im so worried that he'll pull it back and it wont go back again.

Ive told him not to do this at school!

Glad you are seeing some improvement.
On of my DS had an extreme case like a previous poster and he had severe infections (fresh dripping blood and swelling) but worst was urine retention. He almost needed advertising and spent lots of time and A and E.

We tried the creams for months on end. There doesn t seem to be a limit. Finally he had the circ and he had no after pain at all and no problems since.it healed very well.

It turned out he had BXO which almost always requires circumcision. He had no gap at all maybe a pin size to wee. Bxo can spread and even cause cancer but circ is a cure for 95 percent.
I think for the few that have bxo no amount of creams will work.

PinkPupZ · 24/10/2018 01:35

He almost needed catheterising not advertising haha.

@poster PinkPupZ

Hi

Awww, sorry to hear about your son.

I hope he is well now.

We have the GP on Tuesday, so will be interested in what she says.

Wish you guys had been here last night, I posted about my son and I had a barrage of abuse for mentioning his penis online. I was also made to feel guilty for asking as the obvious advice was to see the GP and why would I bother posting. It really upset me but I'm really glad to see such a supportive thread on here now. Glad your son is improving

Stillwishihadabs · 24/10/2018 12:26

I am a peadiatrician and was going to say the same thing - watch and wait, prepubertal boys' foreskins are not meant to retract, puberty often sorts it out. Obviously if there are recurrent infections then circumcision may be needed and that is definitely best done before puberty.

Stillwishihadabs · 24/10/2018 12:29

So I would make the decision around 10/11 , probably in yr6 so secondary transition not disrupted.

Stillwishihadabs · 24/10/2018 12:31

The fact the head "pops" out is fantastic. Encourage him to pull it back gently daily (in the bath is a good time)😀😀

@MummaPI

Oh my, Im so sorry to read this.

@Stillwishihadabs

Oh! Thank you so much for the advice. Much appreciated.

Puberty didn’t fix my sons condition and he had a full circumcision age 12/13. Erections were painful and the cream didn’t help.
He wished he’d done it sooner, but although he had the ballooning when peeing, he didn’t have any infections as a child. Just hated any erections.

boble1 · 02/11/2018 13:30

Hi

Just a quick update.

We saw the GP and she said the cream has worked!

No need for an op, my son is fixed.

I'm so happy and relieved.
