So dd started on propanalol 80mg a night a week ago.
There is a whole back story on another thread but where we are at today is she isn't able to make it through a whole day without getting the debilitating symptoms of a migraine. I'm collecting her early from school every day but this isn't sustainable.
She's on a dairy free diet and takes codeine for pain.

Hi Bonkerez,

I have had chronic migraine for all of my life. I lost no end of time from school lying in a dark room. My eldest daughter has a less nasty form whilst my younger daughter is starting to take after me [she has NSAID's as her first line of management followed by anti-emetics and sumatriptian - still has not found a preventive that suits her].

Propanalol can help most which is why it is the first preventative drug offered. It does not help all and in honesty it can be very trial and error to find a migraine preventative that lives up to its name. I am concerned about codiene. Under NICE & BASH guidelines that should not be the first choice of analgesia for migraine. IF she has more than one migraine a week and is taking codeine it could be the wretched drug can cause almost incessant 'rebound' headaches that can be even more painful than 'just' the migraine on its own.Yes that is saying something but after having been there before I was under a headache clinic it is one I feel needs to be flagged.

Is your daughter under a specialist peadiatric headache clinic? Its worth asking for a second opnion from one especially if she may have one of the less usual forms of migraine.

The Migraine Trust & Migriane Action are both charities that provide info for sufferers and families.
Hope that is of some help.

Thanks for the reply. We are currently under neurology and still having further tests so the propanalol was started to try and ease some of the pain.
She has to have a second MRI and has had bloods done too as there is a concern this could be more neurological and auto immune as he symptoms include tremors and loss of peripheral vision.

School have said if she needs codeine she shouldn't be in school! But without the stronger pain relief she is wiped out by migraine!!!!!! I'm totally at a loss.

Why shouldn't she be in school on codeine??? Presumably she's not driving there. Confused

I don't really have any advice though. My son is on pizotifen as a preventative, but his have always been more a constant pain than a strong pain (if that makes sense?)
