My child keeps sucking in in his ribs

Hi they mummy's I have a question. My ds is 9 month and now and again when he's breathing he sucks in between his ribs. He doesn't appear to be struggling for breath but is this normal. He does every now and again but I only see it when he's undressed so I'm not sure if this happens alot. Any advice would be greatly appreciated x

Please mention this to a Dr and look up intercostal retraction. also look at the little groove at the top of the neck and check if this is being pulled in at the same time. Your lo may seem ok but it can be a sign of respiratory distress. Not something to take lightly. This coming from a mother who's son has regular bouts of pneumonia very bad asthma and continual breathing issues.

Don't mean to panic but my son has been blue lighted in an ambulance for respiratory distress, has had very severe asthma attacks and he sometimes outwardly doesn't look that bad. He's only 20months old and has numerous medications and has been in hospital on oxygen tubes and nebulizers more times than I can count.

Seconding change above - this needs looking at. Video it for the doc as well

CaligulaBlushed · 15/09/2018 20:09

How fast is your lo breathing? Can you count how many breaths per minute please? Are they doing this sucking in right now?

Changedforpost · 15/09/2018 20:12

If you can count breaths over a minute post it on here. I'm sure id know if it was too quick. Spent many a night doing this hourly
with my son .

HettieBettie · 15/09/2018 20:13

I googled this and then took my child to a&e. Was glad I did and so were they x

CaligulaBlushed · 15/09/2018 20:13

You and me both Changed.

Chazmummy · 15/09/2018 20:15

Thank you so far for comments. I've shown docs vid of him doing it before but they just sent us home as his chest has always been clear and he has stopped doing it x

@Caligula awful isnt it. When the drs say to you "just check him every hour to make sure hes breathing" you kind of go into full blown panic. Haven't slept much since he was born needless to say

Changedforpost · 15/09/2018 20:19

@chaz don't let them fob you off if your worried. I went to a&e with my son at a similar age drs briefly checked him over called me neurotic said it was probably a cold . I refused to leave until the consultant had seen him.... he had pneumonia. The junior drs got their arse handed to them. Mothers instinct is never usually wrong

Ask to be referred to a respiratory nurse if it continues and please not that you wouldnt be on your toes with it. Check out breathing rates and what they should be and if your concerned refuse to leave hospital or drs until a reasonable explanation has been given. I'm afraid sometimes you have to fight to get the right treatment or to be listened to

Chazmummy · 15/09/2018 20:25

He's currently under a consultant for his head as he has head tilt, a lump on the back of his head n an unsymmetrical face. He's having an m.r.i scan this month. I'm not sure if it is anything to do with that xx

If He's asleep set a timer on your phone and just count how many breaths hes taking a minute. Keep track of it write them down get videos etc then show your Dr. Does he have any allergies ?excema ?reflux or anything?

Chazmummy · 15/09/2018 20:30
