Day 3 of Year 7 and DD has come home with nits

My daughter started secondary school year 7 this week and I washed and blow dried her (very) long straight hair last night and all was fine. She came home tonight with nits- so obviously I went out and spent £22 on 2 bottles of hedrin ( bloody nightmare, why is it so expensive?????) and have treated everyone with it.
Is it the done thing to phone the school in the morning and tell them so they can email other parents to check? Or what? Or do I just leave it and hope other parents are checking their kids?
Advice on nit protocol welcome...... she had them once before but the school (different school obviously) had already sent an email warning parents.

Should have said, I only saw 2 moving ones on her head so assume this means they have only recently landed.... ?

I have never seen or heard of a nit warning at secondary school.
You've done the right thing, keep her treated, get her to tie her hair back. I'd probably only contact the school if it became an ongoing problem.

RockinHippy · 06/09/2018 22:12

I would let the school know, it's then their call as to what to do with that information, but you will have done the right thing. We've had head lice warnings from high school text arrived when she was seriously ill in hospital & I had to wait a week to treat her, hell that was, so some do send out letters

WobbleTime · 06/09/2018 22:21

Ok so different opinions so far..... they are so vile I can’t face having to deal with them again.

Tell the school

RockinHippy · 06/09/2018 22:30

We found rosemary aromatherapy oil really helped keep them out of DDs hair, which sounds similar to your DDs, we added it to the Vosene conditioning spray, which also helps repel them. We got through primary school with only twice getting them thanks to that & keeping a close watch of course.

We naively didn't bother after the first few weeks or high school as it seemed to be something they'd grown out of, or at least others said that. & she caught them 🙄

RockinHippy · 06/09/2018 22:31

Oh & I'm pretty sure you can still get herring from your GP, maybe not fir much longer, but I don't think the changes in this sort of thing have happened yet 👍🏼

RockinHippy · 06/09/2018 22:32

Hedrin!! Damn you autocorrect 🙄

farfallarocks · 06/09/2018 22:39

If you saw live lice she has had them for a few weeks probably....

Pollaidh · 06/09/2018 22:41

Probably harder to insist with an older child, but we have a strict rule that DD has her hair tied back whenever she's in contact with other children. Every time she goes out with hair flowing, a few days later we have nits, but we never seem to get them when her hair is tied back.

SpacePenguin · 06/09/2018 22:57

Yeah, if you saw 2 moving just by looking at her head, it's very unlikely they jumped aboard today. She's likely had them for a few weeks. Hate them so much.

Luckymummy22 · 06/09/2018 23:47

Nitty gritty comb and conditioner is all you need.
And I wouldn’t really bother telling the school. If
You’ve dealt with it there’s nothing that can be done now.
We did the school the 1st time our DD had them but they never actually did anything

RockinHippy · 06/09/2018 23:50

Not necessarily has she had them longer than this week. If she's been close to someone who has lots of lice, she could have had a few jump aboard whilst sitting close to them this week. We've had that happen before & DDs Head was definitely clear of eggs. So it can happen, maybe even more easily with such long hair

Pollaidh · 07/09/2018 09:49

She's hasn't necessarily had them longer than a week. Once I knew DD had nits and whilst we were getting hold of the Hedrin I asked her to keep away from DS. Found them lying, heads together on the sofa about 5 minutes later and saw a massive nit crawling over DS's head. The little bugger has literally just crawled over. DS had no eggs and no other live lice.

Rhayader · 10/09/2018 19:21

Blow dry her hair as well. The heat from the hairdryer kills 96.7% of eggs (with proper technique - google for this)

GreenTulips · 10/09/2018 19:24

Vosene conditioning spray

It has teatree oil in, this is what repels the lice

Buy it near for £3 and add to your own conditioner or a few drops near in her hair daily - she'll doesn't last long when it dries
