Stubborn sickness bug

Before anyone says go to the GP- I have an appt in an hour! But I wanted to maybe get some advice before I go.

DS 10mo got a sickness bug at the start of the week- couldn't keep anything down, was violently sick and few diarrhoea nappies but no high temp or dehydration. He was so much better yesterday and, whilst he didn't eat or drink much (I bf him) he wasn't sick and was mostly back to his usual self and we went to the park. This morning he started being sick again. Just bringing up a little at first but has gone back to bringing up everything in his tummy. Has anyone else experienced this with their LO? I'm worried the doctor is. going to say to take him to A&E but I don't know what it could be? Just a really stubborn bug or something else?

Any advice or shared experiences greatly received! This is his first illness so I'm probably being over protective!

Maybe just another bug on the back of the first - his tummy's probably a bit more sensitive and susceptible to bugs than usual. If he were on cows' milk I'd suggest cutting it out for a few days, as we found it tended to prolong D&V, but breastmilk shouldn't be an issue. The GP's best placed to comment of course. Hope he's better very soon.

Thank you for replying @AshenFaced, hopefully you're right and it a double bug. He's not had any cows milk but we did try him on a bit of porridge with almond milk this morn which came up. Only gave him that because he was fussing for proper food so much. Going to avoid all food for a few days I think!

We've had more luck with "clear" foods like stewed pear & apple. Crackers might be worth a go. Poor boy.

GimbleInTheWabe · 06/09/2018 12:34

You're right @AshenFaced, he managed to keep down some parsnip purée last night so might try that tomorrow if he's stopped being sick.

The doctor wasn't too worried about him luckily as he was still alert and his vitals were fine, although it was a different doctor that had seen him the other days we took him in. Just said to keep an eye on him and try to get a stool sample tomorrow morning (easier said than done!) so fingers crossed he stops the vomiting and goes back to his usual self. And I can give the washing like some attention Blush

Glad to hear it. Have fun with the sample :) and I hope he's brighter tomorrow.

My dcs arebotu prime examples of why you wait 48 hours before you are officially stomach bug free. Both of them have a horrible habit of getting to around 40 hrs vomit free and then starting again.
Sounds quite normal op, hope he recovers quickly.

GimbleInTheWabe · 06/09/2018 15:04

It's s good job too actuslly @Sweetpotatoaddict as we were due to go to DGPs this afternoon.

He's been in bed most of this afternoon but wakes up crying and has a very low temp of 35.2 degrees (he's usually 36.5 and has never gone below that). I keep wavering between worried that I'm missing something and thinking that he's fine. Not sure what to do, whether to call 111 or just wait and see.

Hopefully he’s better soon, wee pet. Keep a close eye, just because they’ve been seen doesn’t mean they won’t worsen. I’ve always been told that no health care professional minds seeing unwell children with worried parents. So don’t hesitate to call, if he has worsened , particularly if drowsy.

gnarlington · 06/09/2018 16:24

I'd be inclined to call 111 with that low temp

GimbleInTheWabe · 06/09/2018 17:49

So I called 111 who said to take him to GP. Doctor wasn't too concerned as his temp had gone up to normal by the time we got there and typical DS put on a good performance of World's Happiest Baby whilst he was being seen. Obviously glad he had the energy to do so but also doesn't reflect how he's been the rest of the time but hey ho. Back home to wait and see and hope he shakes it off.

Thanks @Sweetpotatoaddict, I do worry that I'm wasting their time but then again DS has only been to the GP for his jabs and once as a newborn because he was so sicky (another thing he grew out of!) so I haven't milked he system too much!

How's he doing today @GimbleInTheWabe ?

You're not wasting their time, they're virtually always happy to see little ones.

GimbleInTheWabe · 08/09/2018 07:55

Not so good @AshenFaced unfortunately. He seemed totally better yesterday but come the evening he got an awful wet cough which has made him vomit more. Called 111 again and as per the doctors advice he's going to the urgent medical centre locally. Really hope it's just a double whammy and bad luck. Luckily I managed to get the stool sample in yesterday morning (that was fun...!) so at least that will be processed next week. His vitals are fine and he's currently asleep so just getting all the bits and pieces together to go.

I'm sorry to hear that. Hope you are OK, it's a lot to deal with as his very first illness x

GimbleInTheWabe · 08/09/2018 19:34

Thanks @AshenFaced. Been a hard day with more vomiting but the walk in doctor confirmed it was just a double whammy as his immune system is low. I've caught his cold too so it's been a bit of a struggle as my DP has been working today. But I'm always reminding myself it could be much, much worse and like all these things- this too shall pass! No idea how parents cope when their LOs have a life threatening illness.
