Migraines, vomiting and the 48h rule

My daughter (9) has had a few incidents of headaches recently which have led to her vomiting. I think they might be migraines & we have a GP appt in the diary. She is autistic which limits her ability to identify when she is getting ill, and to communicate the problem, so it will be a bit harder to catch them early than it might be with an NT child.

I've always stuck firmly to the 48h rule and I get that any vomiting could potentially be a bug. However she's just missed the first 2 days of the new school year for this, when she's patently totally fine, and the impact on her school and our work was significant last term. I know it's not all about DD but the cost/benefit balance of keeping her home 2.5 days each time just doesn't seem to stack up. If your child has migraines, or vomits regularly for any other reason, do you stick to the 48h rule? Or can it be adjusted in individual cases?

A family friend’s dd had a very sensitive stomach and was frequently sick . Eventually the parents got a letter from the doctor and she was allowed to attend school.
She was even vomited in school hours and was permitted to remain. But she was very good at managing her condition .not sure how accommodating school would have been is she threw up in the hall !

Thanks Trumpton, that gives me some hope!

My DS was diagnosed with migraine with vomiting a few months ago. Once we had been to see the GP to confirm that's what it was, the school were happy for me to decide whether he was well enough to attend the following day.

DD friend has migraines which end with vomitting and she does not need to do the 48 hr rule as its clear its not contagious

The schools my dd attends are happy for me to let them know that it was a migraine and they'll take her back as soon as she feels better. That has occasionally been the same day after vomiting in the morning, although more often it takes her until the next morning to feel better enough.

My DD has something called cyclical vomiting syndrome and we've worked out the cause (basically tiredness combined with fruit before bedtime).

We have a letter from the GP (although we had to go through a consultant) which states she has this, so if she does accidentally have fruit before bedtime when she's tired and then vomit, she can just return when she's well enough.

Thanks everyone. All these poor vomiting children. DD finds it very upsetting.
