DS won't open mouth or let me check throat, help

My DS, who's 4, is prone to tonsillitis and whenever he gets an infection I notice a smell from his mouth. Today I noticed the smell but he absolutely will not open his mouth to let me check. He has ASD and speech delay and I don't think he understands what I want him to do, I say 'open your mouth' and show him with my own. He just smiles at me. I say 'Go 'Aaaaaah''. He just ignores me. I try (gently) prizing his teeth apart and he bites me - as a reflex, not to hurt me.

I can't check his throat unless he opens his damn mouth! Any ideas? I feel like crying. I spent about ten minutes saying 'Open your mouth' and now I want to hide in a cave.

Just take him to be seen by a Dr. They'll get in there and if it is tonsillitis they can give you the antibiotics for not if they're needed.

Is he showing any signs of being ill?

Otherwise I would just keep an eye on fluid intake and the likes and just keep an eye on him for any signs.

If you're desperate to look in his throat, maybe do it whilst he's sleeping or try with a torch - give him the torch and encourage him to look inside your mouth with it first?
However, as PP says, unless he seems very unwell, do you really need to look downhis throat? If he has tonsillitis that needs treatment you'll know soon enough. A mild or viral case wouldn't usually require treatment anyway?

Give him a torch and a small mirror, then give him a small cup of water and watch himself drink it and swallow. If you do the same and afterwards do a big lipsmacking aaaaa, with an open mouth and get him to mimic you while waching himself, you might get a peek.

He gets it every month or so and it never goes away on its own. Currently waiting to get to 'the magic number' before GP will refer to ENT.

Can you tickle him and make him laugh?

sorryihaventacluetoo · 23/08/2018 09:32

I'm going to try tickling when I've calmed down a bit. This has upset me so much. I don't really know why. It's just such a small thing that he can't do.

Has he got a temperature? Does he seem ill? are his glands up?

sorryihaventacluetoo · 23/08/2018 09:39

He's not quite right. No fever as yet, but sometimes he doesn't get a fever at all and just starts throwing up everywhere. In the end it always ends up being his tonsils, which by that point are enormous and covered in white spots. I just want to try and catch it early, if I can.

My ds ended up on a low dose of prophylactic antibiotics to ward off tonsilitis. It worked a treat and he didnt end up with a tonsillectomy.

You have to be bug free to start it though
