My 3 month old is struggling to poop

Hello, so I have a 3 month old son and he has the last few days started to struggle to get his poops out much more than normal, he strains and gets very upset for sometimes a couple hours before eventually pooping. When he does poop his poo isn't hard or anything it still seems normal. He's EBF and has had colic from about 3 weeks old in the evenings which we manage with gripe water which has helped a lot. I haven't changed anything I've been eating and I'm already Dairy free so I'm really not sure what has started this struggle to go! Any advice on how to help him or what could be causing it would be greatly appreciated! I have noticed that he is not passing wind as often as he was either' thank you in advance

Have you tried one of those vibrating chairs? Mine often poops in hers for some reason.

Mine did this around the same age. It last a few weeks and then he got the hang of it .. I was told that around this age they become more aware of it all and as they aren't used to the feeling end up holding it in rather than letting it out as its a different sensation / use of muscles.. It was horrible while it lasted but ds got the hang of it.. Also coincided with him going less often from one every day to every few days instead

@Smurf123 thank you that eases my mind a bit and makes sense because he's sort of tensing up, hopefully it will go on it's own then.

@SnuggyBuggy I haven't but will try! Thank you

I wouldn't worry. It's very rare for an EBF baby to get constipated and his poo is still coming out soft. It's normal for them to get a bit strain-y and grumpy at this stage until they get one out. Try a bit of tummy massage to help or bicycle legs and then gently press knees into belly.

You can assist him by doing knees to chest and rocking side to side with some light but firm pressure on his legs iyswim. Or lay him face down over your knees and stroke his back downwards while jiggling your knees a little. Or give him a little concentrated sugar syrup (it draws more water into the bowls which helps with through put) but only do this if he is definitely constipated.
