(maybe triggering?) newborn with listeria meningitis

a relative has just given birth to a little girl who was born with meningitis caused by listeria.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

I've googled, (because I'm scared to ask) it has a 90% survival rate, and a 50% rate of complete recovery.

Anybody have any experience or knowledge of the likely outcomes for the 40% between those two numbers? I don't want to go off reading random websites, I just used the NHS one, which gave me those bald facts

I don't have experience of this but I know several babies who were put into NICU when and are all now thriving. I'm sure one if them had meningitis and fully recovered. NICU staff are amazing and babies can be far more successfully treated outside rather than in the womb.
Have you tried contacting any meningitis charities for advice?
Congrats on your newborn relative. You must all be frantic with worry.

I don't have experience of that condition but my DD had to have intravenous antibiotics at birth due to sepsis. They do blood tests for inflammatory markers which can give an idea if the patient is responding to treatment or not.

yes, thats what they are doing @snuggybuggy - tests for inflammation markers? The numbers are coming down, so this looks good

If inflammatory markers are coming down that hopefully indicates that the LO is having the right treatment. Have the Drs given the parents an update?

Nothing I can add apart from a bump and Thanks

My dd had neonatal meningitis. Her lumbar puncture was positive for meningitis (as would your niece) but she never grew cultures of a bug- meaning we'll never know what bug caused it. (Although they suspected listeria).

It's a long horrible stay for antibiotics (we had to have several lots to cover for every possibly bug, yours will need less) and she will be followed up by neonatal consultants to review her development for at least a year.

However, if the baby is well now, IE no symptoms, that is also a good sign.

My dd is 10 months now and showing absolutely no long term issues. I hope that same for this little baby Thanks

I don't know where i got 'niece' from, sorry

thank you for all your information and sympathy.

Its been quite a frightening situation, but we are hopefully moving the right way now.

I'm very glad to hear it. Have they been given an idea of when she might be able to come out of NICU?
