One Year Old with Large (2cm) Belly Button Hernia - Advice Needed

My one year old son has a 2cm belly button hernia. The Drs advice is just to wait and see what happens but has referred me to a specialist. I am happy to do this but my gut feeling is that it isnt going to go away on its own as its only got bigger and it really is huge. I dont really want it to be operated on unless its completely necessary. Is there anything else that I can do to help it heal? I know they used to tape them although I know this is not advised now. Has anyone tried this? Any advice would be really appreciated. Many thanks.

It's operate or nothing but they usually don't do it until two as most will resolve by then.

My DS had the same and I was concerned too.

Once he started walking (he was in no rush to do so..) It resolved itself. He now has a perfect ' inny'.

My DS has been walking for about a month. How long did it take for you?

My DS had a large 2-3cm umbilical hernia. Lots of wait and see but it didn't resolve itself and seemed to grow with him iyswim. He had a repair op at 2y3m which sorted it. Still has a large 'outie' (at 20yo!) but it looks fine.

Sorry thats wasnt clear. How long did it take for the belly button to return to normal? Did it happen over night or gradually?

I don't remember that clearly. He is now 20.

But it did go down.

My daughters was huge, developed at 1, lasted until she was 3. No operation or anything else, cleared up on its own

My son had a large one too, 2-3cm. At 12 months it was very large, by 2years it had fully resolved with no treatment whatsoever. He has a loose bit of skin from where it had grown even now at 8 but chances are they resolve themselves. I was told they won't operate until over 2 anyway.

Thank you all, this is encouraging.

My DD had an umbilical hernia. We are advised that most resolve on their own by the time a child is 3. Hers didn't so she had a op to repair it just before her 4th birthday. We were in and out of the hospital in an afternoon and she had some mild discomfort for a couple of days but nothing she found distressing and was manageable with Calpol.
