6 yr old - lack of energy/stamina and heavy legs

My 6 yr old son hasn't been right since Easter after a couple of viruses, ear infection, tonsillitis - after which Dr thought glandular fever as his lymph glands were v large.

He still complains he feels tired and his legs especially feel heavy. He can do more than he was a few weeks/months ago though this may be in part as he's not at school. He just doesn't have any stamina - the tiredness also then comes out in tantrums.
He had blood tests a few weeks ago which apparently came back 'satisfactory' and negative for GF. Dr suggested he was run down from the couple of viruses he had but definitely was more than that.

I cannot see how he will cope with a full week at school.

Any thoughts or advice?

Glandular fever can cause long term fatigue but if he definitely tested negative for it then one ear infection and one bout of tonsillitis should not still be having an effect on him now, Easter was 5 months ago! Is he having any other symptoms, fever, headaches etc?

Berries12 · 15/08/2018 23:48

Not really any other symptoms. He had couple of random fevers back in June but none since then. He was busy Monday & part of yesterday so today beside himself with complete exhaustion - crying, couldn't even have conversation with him....

Can you describe what the big day involved on Monday? For a 6 year old who never used to be this way before Easter I don't think it's normal. It could be anaemia, it causes lethargy and tiredness, I would ask gp for a blood test.

It wasn't anything majorly big! He went to a summer club with a friend- there for a school type length of day. Just full of play, craft, lego - nothing too physical as far as I know.

He had a blood test a few weeks ago and I think they did test for anaemia which came back okay....

Food allergies maybe? DH always says he was like this as a kid always tired and 'whiny' with sore legs. Turns out it was dairy intolerance

Hi, my 12 year old son has been off school since last may with glandular fever, it is the most awful debilitating illness. Perhaps your son needs a more recent blood test? My son is still suffering terribly with it and may have to go back a school year, it can take a long time to recover from but he will recover eventually. Your son has all of the symptoms my son has, hope he feels better soon.

Thanks. I did wonder if it could be a false negative for GF. Or food allergies!

It's tough for them - missing out. Sorry to hear your son has been suffering but many thanks for your post.

My daughter had something just like this when she was 6. Her bloods for glandular fever came back as equivocal so I've no idea whether she had it or not. Her glands behind her ears were huge.

But her bloods did also come back as low I. Iron and when this was tested she did gradually pick up.

Thanks for all your messages. Seems like a few of your children have experienced similar....

We went back to the GP today who has referred him to a paediatrician.
