Groin pain in 3yr old, now blood test

Sorry for the long post.

About a month ago my DD who is just turning 3 complained about her leg hurting, it seemed to be after waking in the morning or after a nap.
She would point to the groin/inside of her leg, after this happening a few times and a struggle as she wasn't keen on it being touched I found a pea sized lump so took her to the doctor.
The doctor said it felt like a gland and maybe she had a low level viral thing and to see if it goes in a week or two, if not she would look at getting an ultrasound.
The lump did go but she still mentions the pain and a few times after sitting on the floor I would hear a clunk when she got up.
There is a family history of joint issues, myself with my hips and knees from a young age spending time in hospital.
Went back to the doctor but a different one as the original is on holiday.
She said due to the time it's been and the history she would refer to paediatrics but also has sent her for bloods to check for anything inflammatory.
It doesn't stop her doing anything, she's as energetic as always with only the occasional mention outside of what seems like stiffness upon waking so I don't think it's anything chronic.
I'm now thinking are blood test really necessary, we have them booked for tomorrow, it's just the thought of putting her through them that's putting me off.

Any experiences of this with your lo's?

My own memories as a child are a little sketchy.

Are you worried about them hurting? Because if so, The blood tests will be fine, the HCP will apply a numbing cream to your little girls hands a while before the test takes place, and then they are brilliant at distracting while the needle goes in! My DS has had a fair few blood tests and young children really do get excellent care for these sorts of things.

If your GP has recommended them I really think it's best if you get them done, they'll be wanting to rule things out sooner rather than later

The doctor gave us a prescription for the cream to put on beforehand.
I suppose I am just thinking maybe it's just were she's growing rather than anything else and should I have given it more time.

I know kids deal with things pretty well and even if she gets upset at the time it won't last long, but don't want her to have them for nothing.
Agree the doctor wouldn't do it without reason.

The blood tests will be over so quickly and then at least you'll have peace of mind that all avenues are being explored. I know how you feel, any non urgent medical procedure that may cause pain is always hard to put your child through, but the thought will be worse than the reality and by this time tomorrow it'll all be over

The blood tests will be principally to look for evidence of infection in the hip, which can be very dangerous. Your DD might cry for a few seconds while they take the blood but will have forgotten about it soon afterwards.

Don't know why I was so worried about the blood test, she sat on my lap with her arm behind us and I didn't realise they had finished there was no reaction at all from her.
Well no reaction until she took the plaster off a couple of hours after and she now wants me to wipe it away, she not too happy about the mark and small bruise.
Should get the results at the gp on Wednesday

Well done both of you! I'm glad it went well and I hope the results all come back perfectly clear on Wednesday.

Hi, did you get your DD's results back? Hope all is ok

youlemming · 03/08/2018 21:54

Hi, yes thanks all clear apart from platelets being a little raised but she's since come down with a bug so I expect it's from that.
Doctor still going ahead with the referral to paediatrics because of the family history but it might take a couple of months.
