Period on holiday

My youngest (14) has just got a period with two days left of our holiday. It's quite heavy (day 2 today) whereas before it's been a bit light and irregular so she is disappointed as wanted to swim. She is really not happy about putting in a tampon.
Just wondering if mumsnet have some miraculous answers to get her swimming?? The beach is the only answer I can see but what about the pool?

Mine used tampons tbh (she is 14 and used them the last couple of years on holiday)

OwThatsGottaHurt · 29/07/2018 11:15

I am one of those people who can never use a tampon. I also have often gone for a swim while having my period. Just go to the bathroom before. Make sure wipe and clean . Go for a swim- and straight back to bathroom after to dry and put pants and pad back on.

I am 40 and have never bled in pool or bath. Water seems to stem the flow iykwim

Some people think this is awful but I have never had an accident and was always told this is normal

PlateOfBiscuits · 29/07/2018 11:21

Poor her! As it’s heavy I wouldn’t swim without a tampon if it were me. But maybe tomorrow.

duckyfuzzz · 29/07/2018 11:23

Thatsgottahurt really???? I'd be sooo self conscious. That said, I detest pads.

Op, I used tampons from 14 and haven't used a pad since.

peachypetite · 29/07/2018 11:25

Ergh swimming on your period without using anything is horrible - tampon or don't swim.

slovenlys · 29/07/2018 11:41

What about one of those sponge things? Though they would be difficult to get while away I guess

Tbh I think she has a choice, swimming with tampon or no swimming.

BarefootHippieChick · 29/07/2018 11:43

Does she have any shorts she can swim in to put over her swimwear as added protection, and wear a pad as normal?

BendandBreak · 29/07/2018 12:18

@BarefootHippieChick I'm not sure what would happen to a pad in the water 😱

Thanks for the suggestions folks, they are much appreciated
She is currently on a sunbed being grumpy

A pad would swell up and maybe burst. I wouldn't advise it tbh

BarefootHippieChick · 29/07/2018 12:33

Years ago I wore pads while swimming and they never blew up or burst! At the end of the day it really depends on your dd and how comfortable she feels getting in the water with one on.

BarefootHippieChick · 29/07/2018 12:33

Swell up not blew up!

BendandBreak · 29/07/2018 12:42

Yes I always thought pads would swell up but that might be a thought based on old fashioned pads. Pads these days maybe don't- might get her to try one in the sea to see what happens to it.
I just really feel for her :(
Very grateful for all your mumsnet suggestions and advice!

My DD is on holiday with my ex at the moment, she is 13 and on her third period ever, she is doing great. As far as I know she is not bothering with tampons, she just swims and gets into her dry bikini with a pad when she is out of the water. I'm really proud of her not letting her period stop her doing what she wants to do.
