Calpol Not Reducing Temp

DS (14 months) has a temp of 38.2 ish since yesterday. I thought he might be teething so he's had 3 doses of Calpol in 24 hours for the pain and to help him sleep. However to my surprise his temperature hadn't come down. He's generally tired and a bit irritable but otherwise seems OK (he was awake a lot in the night as he was so hot) , he's currently sat eating his sister's sandwich watching CBeebies but he feels so hot! I'm not after medical advice of course, but reassurancee perhaps that this might be normal for teething? He hasn't got a rash etc. Thanks

I'd not be too concerned as he seems ok in himself, I'd keep him in cool clothing, give him plenty of fluids and keep a close eye on him. Hope it resolves soon.

I thought a 'non responding' (to medicine) temp was usually something to be a bit more worried about?

Try 111

Kidssendingmenuts · 17/07/2018 14:47

Try children's ibruprofen instead. Works a treat for my two x

I thought that Calpol doesn't actually reduce a child's temperature, it just reduces the distress caused by a temperature? So it's useful for pain but won't help with a fever.

Alternate with brufen

ShovingLeopard · 17/07/2018 15:33

I find Calpol does nothing to reduce a fever on my DD, whereas ibuprofen will reduce it by about a degree. Though if he is alright in himself I would leave it, personally.

Wackadoodle84 · 17/07/2018 22:36

As well as being an analgesia, paracetamol (calpol) is an antipyretic so can be used to reduce a temperature.

I have found however that Nurofen works better on one of my dds at reducing a fever. I tend to alternate between the two prn

Nogodsnomasters · 18/07/2018 07:46

With my ds calpol hardly ever reduces his temp unless it's a mild one, children's nurofen works much better at bringing a high temp down in our house.

Thank you all for your input, much appreciated! I called the doc and he wasn't worried since DS didn't have the other 'scary' symptoms. I have him some ibuprofen instead and he was a changed boy! Temp came down, giggling, running about. Fab! Thanks again all. Smile
