Flucloxicillin - bleugh!

DS (3) has been prescribed the above for a week 😭 It tastes so strong, I'm really having troubles hiding it. The only way he's taking it is in a chocolate milkshake made of milk, ice cream and hot chocolate powder - obviously I don't want to be giving this to him multiple times a day for a week! Does anyone have any better (ideally healthier) suggestions?

Ice lollies. Buy some small ones or make your won with fruit juic/squash/milk shake. Half before the AB and then the rest after. The ice will numb the taste buds.

own not won. juice not juic.

DD1 has had it a couple of times, and my advice is: do whatever it takes to get it in!

Our routine went:
Fluclox on spoon, down in one.
Wash down with cup of ribena, made strong.
Square of chocolate to clear the taste away.
Sticker on chart. When she got to stickers, she got a present. One time was a little lego set, another time was a fiver to spend in smiggle.

Note, this didn't work with clarythromycin, but it does work with Erythromycin.

She's actually allergic to penicillin now, and I'm not sad to see the back of fluclox! Grin

God I'm not sure I'm brave enough to just put in on the spoon. Even the doctor told me to hide it. DS is so stubborn and doesn't yet get the concept of long term rewards.

Ds was given it when he was barely 2 and having it made him cry so much he was sick. My SIL is a GP and she said that although it's the best antibiotic for some things, it's definitely not the only one that would work. I went back to my GP and got something much less disgusting instead!

Thing is with hiding it, I always think I risk putting them off that thing too, so I'll only have to find something else to hide it in next time. At least this way she's learnt that it's the medicine that tastes bad and that's temporary.

But do whatever it takes, and if that includes hiding it, hide away!

She came out of hospital recently and for some reason they gave her capsules instead of solution Hmm so that had to be hidden in something as dissolving the contents in water didn't work (surprise surprise). I tried hiding it in Nutella, which didn't work, but DH accidentally licked it and said it was that bad he could still taste it 20 mins later! Poor DH Grin

So even if you do hide it in something, don't forget to give him something to take the taste away afterwards. Also has the benefit of an immediate reward. Good luck!

Oh, also meant to say, I wouldn't worry too much about the unhealthy part of the treats. It's only for a week, and if he's poorly enough to need a strong antibiotic, he could probably do with the extra calories to help him fight the infection.

And if you can't eat crap when you feel like crap, when can you? Wink

Thanks everyone, I'll definitely request an alternative should we ever need it again! Eek you're right, he deserves chocolate! Think I was more worried about him thinking he was going to be getting chocolate milkshake 4 times a day forever but I needn't worry, he's gone off it now! Hope I can find some inspiration to hide it in for tomorrow's first dose!

The only thing my 3YO would take his in was milkshake. I just gave him loads of crusha! I'm not surprised they hate it. I accidentally tasted some and it's what I imagine nail varnish remover would taste like.

whitsunfells · 17/07/2018 23:50

Ah, I might buy crusha tomorrow, thank you!
