Glue ear

Anyone have experience of glue ear? My LG has it and it flares up with every cold. This week she is pretty much deaf and can't seem to shift the cold. The rest of the family have gotten over it really quick. Any advice welcome.

How old is she? My daughters started improving gradually at around 1.5, worsened until then, she had hearing tests every 3 months.
If shes actually nearly deaf by hearing test standards then she probably needs grommets, but we thought my daughter was hearing less than she was at points because she just doesn't respond to things a lot of the time.
Definitely ask for a hearing test if you haven't already, if it's left long term it can cause permanent damage

She's 4. We have had tests at the hospital and they are seeing her again next month when they will plan grommets if they feel she needs them (she does). How was yours with colds. Did they take longer to shift?

Shes nearly 2 now, from just before Christmas until the end of April she had continuous colds so must have either been a few super long ones or she was catching a new one before the old one cleared up. She was born at 28 weeks though so her immunity is still catching up so I put it down to that, the audiologists said that the colds worsened the inner ear fluid but they didn't mention anything about inner ear fluid worsening recovering from the colds to me.

I'd make sure you mention that shes just had a bad cold when they do the test because they told me it worsens the result temporarily. They did say to me not to worry about long term damage though as they said they'll often not pick things up until children get tested at reception age so having picked it up before then is good.

I hope it goes well next month.

Ds is 11yo now. He started ear infections at 10 weeks (constant) and was diagnosed with glue ear at 18 months.
Has had grommets at 20 months, 3.6yo, and 5.6yo. He still has ear infections and glue ear, but finally is showing signs of improvement.

For ds he's much better over Summer (usually June to September), so shows almost perfect hearing then. But during the winter he can be down below 30%.

He adapts well, but now he does recognise when he's low on hearing and will tell people. But at 4yo he just got frustrated and upset. I remember him telling me about the big rattly fridge at school which he couldn't find, but could hear... turned out to be an ear infection starting.

I had it as a child and had grommets. I was deaf and had so many ear infections and hearing tests. No real advise but can you try gentle steaming maybe in the bathroom and child friendly nasal sprays. Im having a similar problem in adulthood and thats what i have been advised otherwise i need gromets again.

I took her to the doctors this morning and it turns out she had a nasty viral infection. I think it must be to do with the glue ear as the rest of us just had a little cold for a few days. She always seems to get them so much worse than us.
