Should I be worried

3.5yr old had a weird mix of symptoms going on over the last 12 weeks. Must note we are going to the GP tomorrow but looking for advice on what I should be asking them to do or if I am just being dramatic. So over the past 12 weeks she has suffered a range of infections like a bad cough that lasted 3 weeks and chicken pox. She has also started bed wetting having previously been dry at night for around a year. Her appetite is next to nothing I have to force her to eat meals if I don't keep up with it she starts to lose weight. She also hasn't actually gained any weight in the last 5 months. Everyone from family to teachers comment about how quiet she has gotten and how pale/sick she looks. She used to be very fit and would do a good amount of walking but she started 8 weeks go to complain her legs where tired on short walks asking to be lifted but this has gotten worse and she even says her legs are 'annoying' her while not doing any walking or moving. Am wondering if all this is connected it some way or just a string of normal things. I am obviously concerned after googling things.

Definitely needs looking into, although not in a panicky way. There could be any number of things at play here, so just tell the gp the list of things as you have done here. They'll prob do some blood tests etc and go from there.

I would ask for a full examination and a blood test. When she's awake is she running round the house full of energy and outside with the good weather or is she withdrawn? Usually their energy level is a good (but of course not exact) indicator of something sinister going on or not. I'd say the cough and chicken pox are totally normal, it would be more the legs and the paleness and lack of appetite that would be of concern I think.

Well I would ask for a blood test but it could be normal
I’d want iron deficiency and cancer ruled out if it were my child

Thanks guys. During the day she does seem on good form but she has definitely reduced her activity levels over the last few weeks and not as bubbly as she was. She is more incline to sit in one spot and play rather than run about and when I try to make her she cries and gets upset. Ringing the GP now this morning and it's same day all so IL be asking to have bloods done x

Great hope you get an appointment for her and the gp takes you seriously x

WillowB · 02/07/2018 23:07

She's probably under the weather after having a few things on the trot. Without wanting to worry you those symptoms were similar to a friends child who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, particularly the bed wetting (body flushing out water at night) and the paleness/weight loss
Definitely insist on bloods.
Fingers crossed it's nothing though

applesandpears56 · 02/07/2018 23:25

Did you manage to get them to test bloods?

Kd56 · 03/07/2018 08:31

Hey guys, the doctor was lovely and took me seriy they said they thought point to diabetes but she also has mild tonsillitis. Her urine was clear for sugar and her finger prick test was fine at 5.2. so left with a plan of antibiotics for the tonsillitis and to see how she is after them if things continue she's to go back in two weeks and be referred over same day to peads.

Seriously**

That's a great result op from the gp. At least you know its not diabetes and that her quietness and lack of eating is because she is still currently fighting an infection. Hopefully the antibiotics get her back to her normal little self x

applesandpears56 · 03/07/2018 21:34

That’s not bad from the gp - but she can’t have had tonsillitis for the past 5 months. And it’s summer so it’s not like you’d expect much Illnesses (not like the winter season). I don’t want to worry you if you’ve been reassured but I think you should push for bloods faster than 2 weeks time. Perhaps ring and ask if they can test her iron and full blood counts etc. you really do need to rule out leukemia given get symptoms imo. The gp has, as gp’s do, considered the most obvious and common things first. It leaves the much rarer things still a concern.

Kd56 · 03/07/2018 21:55

Thanks, I am not 100% reassured but I understand the gps plan because having tonsillitis will obviously result in high infection markers in a blood test do letting the antibiotics run their course and see how she is for a few days after makes sense. Obviously if nothing has changed IL be straight back up demanding old tests. They did say if anything worsens or more concerns to just ring them so IL keep a close eye.

How's she getting on with the antibiotics? Do they seem to have made any difference?
