Hi,

New poster here, so please be gentle!

We have my DS 10-12 month check this week and I'm a little nervous. My son is a big one and always has been. He was over 12 lb at birth by elective CS (I'm 5'9 and DH is 6'1, and we were both over 9lb at birth). He is BF and we are doing BLW, but he has milk for naps and just picks really at his food. He had a dietitian appointment a few weeks ago and we were told he has a cows milk protein allergy. The paediatrician said that at 29.6lb we will potentially need to look at his diet, but he's a bit young at 10.5 months.

I'm really worried the HV will tell us the same. When we have raised his weight with the Dr or HV they have said he is just a big baby and is following his own weight chart and not to worry too much. He is also 98th centile for height, so he is just a little chunk! He eats veg and fruit and drinks water well. He's recently started crawling and is close to walking.

I think I'm just looking for reassurance that there are other big babies out there!

Both my DC were 99% plus for height and weight at birth and during their first year. Now 11 & 9 and both way over 99% for height but weight has dropped a bit.

At 10 months your son hasn't started walking yet, he will lose a fair bit of weight when he becomes mobile. Try not to worry.

Try not to worry they even out. I always felt pressure for my DS to fit on a line he was just a chunk. Once he started walking and then running, climbing etc it dropped off. And as he eats more and drinks less milk the same. At 2 I'm still being told his weight/height are too far apart on the lines but you can see the muscles on him. It'll start coming down as he grows. Don't panic. X

Once they've always been around the same centile and height and weight are similar centile it doesn't matter, he's just big, not extraordinarily big. My 7 month old is 99th for height and 95th for weight, he was 7lb 11 at birth and in I think 75th for the first while but just shot up after a few weeks. My older son was similar but not as heavy, but he was born 3 weeks early and in scbu for a week at birth, both breastfed too.

Ah that's good to hear. He's in proportion, his lovely chunky thighs seem to be slimming down a bit. He just looks like he's older than he is!

Hello, all three of mine have been way above the 99th centile for height and weight, the health visitors always told me I was over feeding. It caused me so much stress at the time but now they are so tall and skinny so I wish I’d ignored them and trusted my own judgement. Big babies just run in my family so I think it’s just genetics. I breastfed 2 and formula fed 1 for what it’s worth and their weights were identical all the way.

Thank you for replying. That's great to hear. I think Im just paranoid about it, it's the first thing anyone comments on, so I'm hyper aware I think. We've gone through the checklist they sent and he's met all the milestones, is crawling a lot, so it's obviously not hindering him!

DS2 looked like a little fat Buddha at this age. He was huge but was almost entirely breastfed . I have no idea how he managed it as we are a lot of skinnies. After a few more months he suddenly grew taller and at 5 is a skinny active kiddie. Once active he really slimmed down and the wristlets and anklets disappeared.
