Hello. So a couple of days ago we noticed a rash appearing around the wee man's nappy area which quickly spread to hands and feet. A quick trip to the GP confirmed hand foot and mouth and after a call at nursery apparently it has been rife there - terrific!

Oddly enough, despite the rash he seems in a remarkably good mood. Almost unnervingly so which doesn't sound like it should be a bad thing but my god it gets trying at 4am! He's normally a good sleeper (7:30-6) but the last 48 hours has been a nightmare. The first night he woke at 1 and stayed up until 6 and last night he went to bed as normal and woke at 10:30 and stayed up until 5! Throughout the whole thing he's been the happiest bubba alive, it's so strange.

Has anybody else had this?! Everywhere I read it's tears and misery. Obviously I'd rather he be happy but I'm worrying maybe the diagnosis is wrong. The rash certainly fits the bill though he doesn't have any ulcers in his mouth. He also hasn't had the fever they associate with it beyond getting very sweaty last night though I attribute that to him getting a bit frantic through lack of sleep.

The funny thing is I'm normally desperate for any form of affection from him as it all goes to his mum and the cat but he has turned into a cuddle/kissing monster. It would be sods law that I finally get the love I want and then contract his disease!

Have you given him Calpol?

AlwaysVacant · 19/06/2018 11:06

I have yes. Calpol normally makes him quite drowsy too so this makes it even more unusual.

Calpol is full of sugar, so that could be the explanation. It quite commonly makes kids a but hyper (certainly does with mine!) It's more apparent the older they are as they can show you their energy levels better

I'm not Calpol bashing at all - we gladly use it! But if he doesn't have a fever and isn't in pain, why give it? Try not giving it to him before bed tonight and see if he sleeps better.

Hmm good point about the sugar content, maybe he's just been drowsy before because he's been unwell and not because of the Calpol. Doesn't explain why he was crazy the first night though as we hadn't used anything until after the dr. visit (who told us to use it as he said it would help him).

Babies are just plain peculiar!
