How much exercise can DD do

on a strained knee ligament? She's off to Butlins with school on Monday, and there's the high rope challenge, the climbing wall etc.

Bump 😆

Isn't it usually two weeks' rest? Didn't whoever diagnosed it say?

Mishappening · 15/06/2018 13:54

Ligaments are slow to heal and often more trouble than a broken bone.

I would ask her clinician - no point in risking making things worse.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 15/06/2018 13:58

The GP said 2 weeks off PE, when I mentioned Butlins and that DD would be very active, she said it would be fine, and to stop if it felt unusual, but I'm not sure. DH is an ex-semi-pro footballer, and is worried about her doing permanent damage at such a young age.

Is it worth the risk. For the 30-60mins she sits out chatting to her mates not doing the activity or she does the activity, hustlers herself further and has to go to have it looked at meaning she misses out Potentially two members of staff have to take her to hospital and you or DH have to go meet them.

Ligament damage hurts and takes a long time to heal.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 15/06/2018 19:47

It kind of defeats the point of going to Butlins. It's a 5 day residential trip, with activities laid on all day, just with meal breaks. Their PE teacher's going, but doesn't seem to have a clue about these types of injuries, quite frankly.

Screaming do you think the GP's wrong, then? Confused

OP you obviously don't trust your GP's advice if you are asking on here!

SinceWhenDid · 15/06/2018 21:57

When did she do it?

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 16/06/2018 13:34

Literary I don't know if she understood how much activity DD could be doing next week, but also I don't know if DH is being over cautious. Confused

She did it on Tuesday the 5th of June.

Ligaments are usually 3-6 weeks rest in my experience.
The last injury I had like that was 8 weeks.

Ligaments take longer than bones to fix and the temptation with ligament injuries is to jump back in as soon as the immediate pain dies down, but that prevents it healing properly.

Maybe as a compromise select a couple of activities she can do that are lower risk of aggitation and a couple that she absolutely mustn't.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 16/06/2018 13:41

I'll try and grab the PE teacher before they leave on Monday and see what fits in each category. There's a disco on Thursday evening, presumably that counts as low agitation? 😀

Screaminginsideme · 16/06/2018 21:37

The GP said no PE - I think adventurous activities are more than PE.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 17/06/2018 08:21

That's precisely why I was confused by her advice.

eurochick · 17/06/2018 08:23

Did the GP understand what the trip entailed? She might just have thought active meant active play rather than the types of things you mention.

DragonsAndCakes · 17/06/2018 08:23

Butlins would suggest to me a bit of swimming and some shows to watch. I wonder if the GP thought that too.

I think no PE=No residential.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 17/06/2018 08:37

Dragons I did explain that it was a school trip and would be very physically active. She'll have to go, as we won't get our money back, and we can't afford to lose it. It's tomorrow. Also, we've spent money on clothes for it, as she didn't have enough for 5 days. I usually do a wash every day.

You need some advice from a physio or sports massage therapist. Most of the latter work from home, so you may be able to get in touch with one today. Try asking your local running club (runners get lots of injuries so they always know sports massage therapists) to recommend one. My sports massage therapist has more than 10 years experience and would definitely be able to help with this. Taping the knee would probably help.

frogsoup · 17/06/2018 08:44

Google the sunk costs fallacy. You've paid already, whether she goes or not makes no difference to whether you can afford it! But if she goes and does further damage, she may be paying the price for years to come. How much money you've paid shouldn't enter into your calculations here.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 17/06/2018 09:18

Email from the teacher in charge of the trip:

"There is a doctor on the Butlin's site and all of the instructors have medical training. As well as myself and the other staff being qualified first aiders - we will all make sure DD only does the activities that she feels comfortable doing. If she starts to feel any pain or discomfort, she can of course stop."

That was the GP's original advice. There are plenty of activities she will be able to do: archery, some circus skills, drum workshop, swimming.

I'll Google sports massage therapists now.
