Very high temp - not sure why

DS is 5 - last weekend came down with what we think was a simple vomiting bug. He was being sick and having diarrhoea approx every hour from midnight until 9am. He then developed a high temp in the afternoon but went to bed and was a bit better the next day. Kept him off school a couple of days to make sure he was better and he seemed fine although his poos have been very pale - like diarrhoea colour but solidly formed (sorry for the TMI). Fine for a few days then Thursday afternoon suddenly starting shivering, vomited once and then has had a 40 degree temperature ever since! Not really sure whether I need to take him to a doctor or not? Calpol not bringing temp down that much, but after nurofen he is playing, drinking, eating, laughing etc. It's been over 48 hours now so I'm not sure what to do. Not experienced a temp like this being so high for so long before and also not sure if it's connected to the first illness or if he has picked up something else on going back to school? WWYD?

Have you checked his tonsils? Sounds like tonsilitis

Nogodsnomasters · 09/06/2018 19:42

Just my own personal experience of something similar in March with my ds3. Tues morning diarrhea, Tues night vomiting. Wednesday back to normal and rest of the week, Saturday afternoon vomit again just once, rash on tummy, went to doctor advised viral rash and bug. Sunday more diarrhea all day. No fever with his but symptoms with 4 days of being normal in between. Had never come across anything like it before! Another note, calpol tends to be crap for high fevers in my opinion, nurofen much better, what does nurofen bring it down to? Is he drinking enough to replace lost fluids? Also totally normal for pale poo for a few days after a stomach irritation (such as norovirus) but anything more than a week of pale poo or if the poo is white then needs to be seen.

Sounds like a virus or tonsillitis as someone has mentioned but I would've thought he'd have mentioned the sore throat if it was. My ds gets tonsillitis and it makes him cough so much he gags and is sometimes sick.
A simple tummy bug should only last 2-3 days so definitely ring 111

Thanks everyone - I rang them and I'm now waiting for a call back.... wish I'd rung sooner as I expect it's probably going to be a long wait. He has said a couple of times that his throat hurts a little bit when he swallows but I looked in with a torch and they seem ok. (I'm no doctor though).

Nogodsnomasters - interesting that you have had a similar experience - nurofen bringing it down to approx 38. I've heard lots recently about how it's better to actually let them have a fever so I'm not so bothered about that but I'm just stumped as to what it could be? Thanks for the info xx

Yes he is drinking fine and eating small amounts - not as much as usual

Have you thought of uriine infection? Those symptoms are similar to how my ds has been with kidney infection. Please get them to check urine

Nogodsnomasters · 09/06/2018 22:48

Hi op did you hear anything back from them yet? Im in Northern Ireland so different system here we don't have 111 and we saw out of hours doc on the Saturday night, I did start to panic that he seemed fine for 3 days and then puked again this time with a rash appearing on tummy but Dr examined him very well and I was reassured by that. The rash faded about 4 days after xx

Hi sorry for the delay, yes they rang back at 11pm, 2am and 8.30am! Got an appointment for 10am this morning and we were seen instantly. Of course by the time we got there his temp had gone down to normal for the first time in days! But she checked him over and he has an enlarged tonsil on one side so she is pretty sure this is the reason for the fever although no pus etc so he doesn't need antibiotics.

Glad I went to have him checked so thanks for all your help. Fingers crossed he is on the mend and I can get some sleep tonight!!
