Single palmar crease

Looking for any knowledge or experiences others have had.

My 9 week old has a single crease on one palm and a double crease on the other. It wasn’t picked up on discharge from hospital at birth or at the six week check but I noticed it and booked a GP appt. The GP agreed it is a single crease but said she doesn’t have much knowledge of it or what it can be indicative of aside from Downs Syndrome. We have an appointment for a paediatrician at the hospital but not for a few months.

I am now worried that there is something wrong and neither the GP and HV have any experience of just one hand having this so cannot tell me much.

Anyone know more?!

Hopeful bump in case anyone is on the commute and reading...

I'd try not to worry. If there are no other concerns then there is probably nothing to worry about. Some people are just born with one crease. Dd (10) has one crease on one hand and what looks at first glance yo be one on the other (but there is a very small second crease) but it's not an issue.

Thank you for replying. It’s so hard not to worry in the gap until being seen!

I’ve also noticed a high arched palette and googling (I know I shouldn’t) both together brings up Fragile X Syndrome.

I know a surgeon with one crease. When my daughter was being assessed (for very serious brain damage) they tried her palms but she had two creases. She was still very sick, so I'm not sure how reliable it is without additional symptoms.

I've got a single palmer crease on both hands. It has never been looked at medically. Google tells me 1.5 % of the population have them. I always knew I was special!!

PinkAvocado · 06/06/2018 22:52

It doesn’t seem a strong indicator then. I’m worried as he also has a high arched palette too. Oh the worry!

I've got it too
Can be normal variant

phlewf · 06/06/2018 22:59

I have it too, to the extent they did extra tests when i was born. Came to a sum total of nothing. Try not to worry, they might not be experts but they are very good at picking up something not right.

Couchpotato3 · 06/06/2018 23:04

I also know a surgeon with a single palmar crease (wonder if it's the same one?!) I've got a high arched palate and it's never caused any significant problems for me. If your DC is otherwise well, it's very likely to just be normal variants.

boatyroo · 06/06/2018 23:05

I have it on one hand too. I don't think it's ever been noticed medically (or even by my parents until I noticed myself after reading that Tony Blair has it). Do try not to worry too much until you get it checked.

My dd has it on one hand, it was picked up I theatre after a cesearean section and the midwife put the fear of God in to me saying it was "indicative of some syndromes" I found myself looking for things that weren't there because I was so worried. It was also noted she had a sandal gap in her toes. She was thoroughly checked over by a pediatrician and is totally healthy, but I did worry for a.long time that something would come up down the line. She's 4 now. Don't worry about it a single crease on its own is probably nothing to worry about x

tinytoucan · 06/06/2018 23:16

My son has it. It was flagged up on his newborn check after he was born, but he never had any further investigations. He’s 2 now and it’s never been a cause for concern. After we found out he has it we checked our own hands and interestingly my DH has it on one hand too.

PJ67 · 07/06/2018 00:04

I have a single palmar crease on one hand and my son has one on both hands. I mentioned it to a Consultant geneticist I knew through work and he said it was nothing to worry about. Google famous people with single palmar creases and I'm sure you'll find there's loads of them. I remember googling when my son was a baby and I was convinced he had a genetic syndrome as he seemed to have several characteristics but I was just over worrying.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences but also for not saying I’m ridiculous.

My mum is very unwell atm and I think I’m finding it harder than usual to not google and symptom spot.

Dh and ds have one - it seems to run in their family. Dh has multiple degrees and is one of the smartest men I’ve ever met.

It’s found in some syndromes but it isn’t as a single sign diagnostic of any of them. Ds also has a couple of cafe au lait spots and we got a very quick appt to check him over. He also has a tongue tie and high palate but is smart as a whip and trilingual at two.

So don’t panic. It’s good they’re looking at him, but chances are he’s fine and both downs and fragile x are things you can rule in or out with testing.

Sorry about your Mum, yes it’s very normal to have anxiety in such a situation. Go easy on yourself Flowers

PinkAvocado · 10/06/2018 19:24

Thank you so much for your kindness. Apparently if it is a family trait, that is usually fine but no one else in our families have it which adds to my worry.

Hi, just curious if you saw the paediatrician as I have just found this on my 8 week old little boy and I'm really worried. What was the outcome? Thank you xx

Lauraloolou · 09/02/2020 13:28

It was picked up on my sons 6 week check up too. I was told it’s probably nothing as everything else looks fine but I am worried sick.
I wish she never mentioned it :(
Did you have any outcome from paediatrician visit?
Xx
