Hello

MY DD had a virus last July, and has coughed and throat cleared since.

We tried a nasal spray which made things worse.

Tried a brown inhaler.

The week before her long awaited hospital appointment, everything stopped!

I thought the inhaler had worked it's magic.

Paed listened to all her symptoms and diagnosed her with a tic.

He said they may come and go and change.

A couple of days ago she started inhaling deeply for no reason.

Took her to the GP who listened to her back and said it's another tic. A breathing one.

Im so freaked out - Ive never heard of breathing tics before.

Has anyone elses little one had a breathing tic?

xx

My dd started various tics after an infection in march.. a lot, various facial tics, strange thing with her shoulder blades, this little barely audible cough.. i read and read about it and eventually stumbled upon pans/pandas and freaked out !! Brought her to the GP and he totally discarded pans/pandas (she saw doc twice over the period she was sick and no strep and he also didnt seem to be a believer in pandas either), he said tics are extremely common in kids and they almost always grow out of them but the big thing is to ignore them, dont feed it is what he said, they're arent on purpose but the kids can subconsciously do it if attention is drown to them and it can make them worse so just pretend it isnt happening. He did send us for bloods etc and they all came back fine, now they all waxed and waned and eventually went away after about 10 weeks for about 3 weeka but i noticed the cough the last few days here and there but im not panicking too much. Sorry this probably isnt much help as im kind of in the same boat, im just hoping my doc is right, im thinking he is but have the little niggling fear of pandas in the back of my mind. My advise is if you havent been, start ignoring it and see if it goea away theres not much else you can do

Hi

Im sorry to hear your little one has tics.

I must say I was so shocked at how quickly and dismissive the consultant was! I thought he may have examined my daughter at least.

I was told to ignore the tics but when she inhales, it makes me jump.

I have severe health anxiety too which doesn't help. Im in a state that her deep inhaling is a sign of heart failure or something sinister.

I will check out PANDAS.

Thank you xx

My son has tics although he's now 11 and seems to be growing out of them. He has had the breathing one which was like he needed to take a really deep breath. I also recall having something similar as a child and have had it a few times since, where it feels like I need to almost yawn to get air. Does sound like a tic and I'm sure it will go. It's really hard to ignore though and did used to make me feel really anxious.

My daughter had tics when she was 8. Involuntary jerks and swallowing and little noises. It went on for more than a year. Took her to Docs who said she probably would grow out of it by late teens! They actually stopped really soon. I think she was only 9 or just 10.

Wierd, just stopped noticing them and they went. Before they drove me nuts though, reading her a story and all this twitching and jerking. It was really hard not to ask her to stop. Sometimes I did and she always said when she tried to stop it got worse!

I have both. As I got older I’m more able to control them. I do have asthma as well.

How is your daughter now viiswi?

boble1 · 08/11/2019 14:34

Hi @MiMiMaguire

Thank you for asking.

She still has the breathing tic and also has one where she opens her eyes wide while watching TV or on her tablet.

The breathing one still freaks me out.

At the moment, she has an awful cold and I'm hoping the throat clearing and coughing tic doesn't reappear.

xx

Hitting up all these old threads shamelessly...anyone have tips for how to control one’s own anxiety/annoyance about these things? I feel my mood is at mercy of my kid’s tics :/ also anyone’s kids have issues with others noticing/themselves feeling upset by it?

MiMiMaguire · 27/12/2019 22:22

I get anxiety over them, first of all they are irritating but I get this horrible feeling like why does she have something wrong, what is wrong with her brain. I know other parents are dealing with much worse things and it's trivial in comparison but you can't help how you feel. I just have to leave the room and have a break from it and recharge myself to deal with it again

taykitty20 · 30/12/2019 15:29

Yeah, that's what I feel, like it's a sign of something misfiring and that's always scary. I do tell myself we're lucky and she's ok in many ways but unfortunately that only gets me so far in not feeling sad about it or worried about it. Also...I think it is definitely trivial in comparison to a lot of stuff, but the thought of her not liking this about herself (and I know we all have to confront stuff we don't like...) or other people giving her a hard time makes me so sad. Here's to good health and good luck in 2020..

mimi can I ask what bloods you requested? I've been fobbed off by gp; not quite sure what to push/ask for?
