10 month old refusing fluids

My 10mo DS has been poorly since last week. We took him to the walk in centre last Thursday but they couldn't find anything wrong, he did have a temp of 38.4 but that was it, couldn't find any infection. He's been refusing fluids since last Wednesday, you can just about get 2oz of formula into him every 3-4 hours. He literally screams at the bottle after that. He is point blank refusing water or juice. I literally don't know what to do. The temp is now gone and he seems better but still not 100%. Anyone else had similar? I'm worried about dehydration. He hasn't asked for a bottle once, only considers it if it's offered and then it's a struggle to get him to even have the 2oz

Would he drink out of a cup instead? Perhaps his mouth is hurting in some way. I would get him checked again if i were you

Are his nappies wet? If not get him to be seen againz

Gooseygoosey12345 · 04/06/2018 16:40

He does drink from a cup but it's tiny sips. We've been giving him drinks this way but he gets bored quickly. Thank you for the tip though!
He has been having wet nappies but nowhere near his usual amount.
I think you're both right about getting him seen again, it was my first instinct but sometimes you worry about being a bit paranoid!

Oh also, had a look in his mouth but can't see anything unusual, not even a swollen gum from teething! (No teeth yet either)

My dd (11mo) had this a couple of weeks ago and I was concerned of drier nappies. Anyway we got her seen to and other than a bit of a virus there was nothing wrong with her apparently and they weren't worried.
The advice they gave regards to drinking was not to worry about whether it's water, juice, milk or formula as long as they're taking something, and to give foods high in water content such as yoghurts and fruits veg etc.

Soon passed and she's back to normal now. I hope yours does too

Maybe try giving him a dose of paracetamol half an hour before offering him something to drink incase hes sore. Have you ttied ice lollies? Nice and sweet and coolnif his throat is sore too. Will he take any solids? Wet foods like yoghurts and jelly will hydrate him too.

If hes absolutely refusing everything then get a medicine syringe and give him 5mls of juice every 5 mins.

@sleeveface ah that's reassuring! It's probably the same with him tbh. The rest of us did have a vomiting bug over the last week so maybe it was that but without the vomiting! Thank you!

Yeah I was syringing it in the other day when he was refusing, I just thought he'd have started to take fluids better by now. He's having a few oz's and funnily enough just took 5oz which is his usual amount for his 5pm bottle!! I think he would have taken more but he went back to sleep before I had a chance to make it. Maybe we're turning a corner!

I'll offer liquidy foods as well then as he is definitely easier to get solids into than liquids at the moment. I worry about ice lollies in case they break off, again, clearly I'm paranoid lol but he bites everything (think because we did BLW? Seems to be a habit now). I've got plenty of yoghurts, might make a veggie soup and see if he'll take that, any other ideas?

My dd (breastfed ) went on nursing strike at the same age. She would try and feed but then cry and turn away, I couldn’t get her to drink, so stressful. I went to the GP and her ears were inflamed, a viral thing. So it was painful to swallow. I’d get the GP to have a peep at ears and throat.

I'm going to book another appointment for tomorrow. He was thoroughly checked on Thursday, the doctor was brilliant but he couldn't find a thing. Maybe it's come up since!! He's had a cough for a while as well but I didn't think it was related. Maybe it is!! Well I'll see my own GP tomorrow and hopefully get some answers but he just had 9oz in 2 hours which is a lot for him now so hopefully he's on the mend!
