Chest infection

I posted the other day about my sons cough, well it turns out he has a chest infection and throat infection, we had him at A&E last night for rapid breathing and he was given an inhaler and antibiotics, we've been told to keep an eye of course in case breathing becomes bad again but he's had 3 doses of antibiotic, 1 last night, 1 this morning and 1 at lunch time. This afternoon he's had some diarrhea, is this usual with chest infection? He's never had a proper chest infection before (always throat or ears or colds) but he has had many antibiotics for ear infections before and it's never given him diarrhea before? It's just amoxicillan which he's had before. He's not eating much at all, few mouthfuls a day for the last 3 days but drinking enough. I've tried googling to see if chest infection usually can cause stomach upset but haven't been able to find anything. Anyone any experience with this? Thanks.

It’s probably the antibiotic as a side effect is an upset tummy

Nogodsnomasters · 03/06/2018 16:53

Yeah Im thinking that's really the only thing it can be, usually he's fine on amoxicillan but when he normally has them for ear infections he's usually eating a lot closer to his normal amount of food so stomach is coated whereas this time he's barely eating a thing so all he's got in his tummy is the meds really.

Hi everyone, I thought ds's fever had broke yesterday after 3 days as he felt much cooler when he woke yday morning so I didn't bother taking his temp all day yday. This afternoon when I got home from work I took his temp and it was 37.7, the room was hot and the tumble drier was on so I left it for 30 minutes and tried again it is still up at 37.8 the strange thing is he feels totally cool and normal to touch? Any other times he's had a temp in his 3 years he feels warm like you'd expect. I've took my own temp and thermometer seems to be working fine, I even changed the plastic tip on it too and tried again and he's still slightly elevated. Now I'm wondering did the temp go and come back a day later or was he always low grade yday but feeling totally normal on the outside?? If so he would be on day 5 of fever now which is worrying. He's on day 3 of antibiotics today for chest and throat infection. Anyone ever come across this, cool child reading a fever? I do realise most people probably wouldn't worry about shit like this but I suffer from health anxiety and find it hard to relax until I know for sure what's going on.

I’d take him back to the doctor as a fever while on antibiotics could mean they are not working and he maybe needs a different or stronger one

Thank you balancingact if he's still reading a temp tomorrow I will ring the doctor in the morning and ask for further advice. I just can't understand him feeling cool on the outside but reading a fever on the thermometer, I actually only took his temp for the sake of it as I'm a bit thermometer-crazy, fully expected it to be normal as that's how he felt. I'm glad it is only low grade even if it is still here as first 3 days he between 38 - 39.4 off/on.

I can’t judge by my hand at all as they’re always cold so I just go by the thermometer so do understand! You haven’t said what age he is, if under 2 particularly I would be tempted to get him seen at ooh if temp not coming down with antibiotics/calpol/neurofen. Keep just a nappy on him and try some cold fluids (age permitting)

Nogodsnomasters · 06/06/2018 07:57

Thanks for replying. He's 3 & 1/2. I usually can't tell by hand either so I use my lips or cheek against his forehead as a better judgement. I gave a dose of calpol at bedtime because of the thermometer reading but he felt cool all night long and this morning had a normal reading of 36.7 so I'm totally confused.

Local children's ward told me that the normal range for ear thermometers are up to 38 as they're more sensitive than other types. My daughter's was regularly 37.7 and they said that was fine if she was otherwise well. I totally understand about the health anxiety, I've had counselling for mine and it really helped. You can self refer in my area, maybe worth looking into? Flowers
