Perthes disease

Waiting for ultrasound and xray to investigate queried Perthes disease in DS. He's 8, with some hyper mobility of leg joints (particularly dodgy ankles). Should I be asking that he sits out particular things in sports/pe at school? I didn't think to ask gp at the time! What have others done in a similar position? Any advice gratefully received! TIA.

Presumably he's being investigated because he has hip/groin pain or a limp? I think it would be reasonable to keep him off sports (and anything else that worsens pain) until they understand the cause.

I was treated for suspected perthes (started around 7/8 yrs) which in the end they classed as juvenile arthritis and during flare ups activities would be very limited but mainly due to pain. If I physically could I would do PE.

My DD is also 8 and has Sever's which is inflammation in the heel growth plate, she was put on enforced rest by the physio when it was at its worst, but now it's settling we leave it up to her.
She will join in most PE sessions but depending on what it is she will self limit, especially if it's a lot of impact on hard ground.

I would only stop activities completely if it's causing pain.

Thanks for the replies.
He only really mentions pain in his ankles after walking/exercise for ten minutes or so, I was assuming it was the uncomfortable turn of his feet, it was the doc manipulating his limbs who mentioned something about his hip. I had hoped it would be a matter of muscle strengthening exercise for his ankles, but that wasn't mentioned!
