Sunburnt baby

Despite regular applying of factor 50 to all my 7 month olds exposed skin while at the beach today, his poor little face is pink this evening. He is pretty hot to touch as well. Seems a little restless. How can I help him? What signs/symptoms do I need to watch out for? First time mum and just feel like I've let him down.

Ideally babies shouldn’t be in prolonged sun at all, even with sun cream, so for next time can you get a pop up beach shelter?

You can give calpol if you think it will be sore, and apply moisturiser/aftersun to the red areas. Try to encourage him to drink more fluids where you can.

Also, ALWAYS a hat. Even if you think it’s a bit overcast. And you can’t use the previous year’s sunscreen as it degrades so if it isn’t from this year you need a new bottle.

Sudocrem works a treat

SendYouUpinFlames · 22/05/2018 21:33

Aftersun will help his skin feel better and more comfortable.

He is probably just uncomfortable.

Always put him a hat on. No matter if it is overcast.
Keep him out of the sun for the next few days.
Don't worry OP. He will be ok.

Sudocrem works well. Don’t beat yourself up OP I’m sure he will be fine and resist googling it you will read horror stories! Also check the star rating on the cream. It needs to be 5 star for the best protection.

Thanks all for the tips and reassurance! I smothered his face in sudocrem last night and he's looking so much better and seems much less agitated. Also for the record- he has had a proper sun hat on (a bucket hat style!) and played mainly in the shade from the wind break! I'll be much more vigilant today though.
