Hello

My 2 yr old has been really poorly the last few days, he’s spiked temperatures of 39.2, been sick, sleepy and generally poorly. He’s had bright red patches on his cheeks for weeks now, they flare up and down. His temperature has returned to normal tonight but it’s a battle to get him to drink anything or eat much. Tonight I noticed he’s covered all over his back and tummy & chest in tiny little spots and I’m really worried as to what on earth is going on? Should I call 111? The GP prescribed some soap alternative and wasn’t interested, stating it could be slap cheek but as I said his cheeks have been like it for weeks and it’s only in last two days the other symptoms have appeared. Thank you!

Probably a post viral rash. My ds2 always gets them after he's been poorly.

Probably wouldn't hurt to minimum get the pharmacist to have a look though!

I presume you have done a glass test?
If so, viral rash is probably right- body fighting whatever is going on.
Hope he feels better soon.

Thank you, my other son had full blown meningitis at 5 weeks old so I’m hot on the glass test. Thank you for your reassurance, I’ll keep a close eye on him and see how we go

Without someone looking at the spots there is no way to diagnose the cause. There are viral rashes, chickenpox, eczema, scarlet fever is doing the rounds too.

Are the spots blanching when you press on them with a glass? If not then A&E due to the risk of meningitis/sepsis.

If they blanch but he is still not drinking and seems lethargic then also get him checked.

If you phone 111 they can direct you to the best place or phone an ambulance for you if needed.

Thank you yes they blanch. He’s had calpol and is sleeping now so I’ll keep a close eye, another sleepless night checking him. And will get to GP in the morning. I really appreciate the help everyone.

Sorry quick question can Scarlett fever rash not be that red? The tiny little dots feel sandpapery but they aren’t very red. Googling away and I shouldn’t be, now worried it might be Scarlett fever with the red cheeks... but little spots/dots aren’t bright red. What do you think?

Sounds like post viral rash, sandpaper you, come up v quickly. Google it and look at pictures.

If you ring 111 they will likely get you in to see out of hours GP to check it out.
