Mouth ulcer? Warning: pic

My DS is 6, molars coming through. Has been complaining about mouth pain for a couple of days, but was pointing to the gap where a lower milk tooth fell out recently. He is autistic and can get a bit muddled with descriptions, but tonight he was a bit more clear and said it was at back of mouth. I had a look and saw what looks to me like a huge mouth ulcer on inside cheek. It’s yellow/white and really sore, and wondered if anyone who is familiar with ulcers would mind looking and confirming if they think it is/isn’t an ulcer? Am not sure if I should take him to GP or just use bonjela/saltwater rinse and see if it starts healing. Thanks a lot

Ouch that looks painful! I am no expert but i would say a mouth ulcer can last a couple of weeks so keep going with otc treatments, maybe ask a pharmacist. If it doesn't go then it's a dentist you would need rather than a GP.

Bless him, that looks really painful poor thing Flowers. I get a lot of ulcers, and they tend to be more whiteish and transparent whereas his looks a bit thicker and more yellow? Maybe keep a close eye on it over the next few days and keep up with saltwater and bonjela, and then book an appointment if it doesn't start to clear up

Both my DS and I suffer with mouth ulcers badly. They are so painful! The only thing that ever gives any relief for me is Iglu. It puts a thick coating over the ulcer and the pain goes away instantly. Its horrible and gloopy but it work so who cares. Bonjela stings and gives relief for about 30 seconds - useless stuff. Get Iglu.

an ulcer that size that looks bloody painful. I would take him to the GP in case he needs antibiotics. I’ve had ulcers smaller than that and felt feverish with it. The pain of that must be indescribable. How is he eating?

Rainatnight · 12/05/2018 21:00

That looks really painful. Mine don't clear without cortisone, which can't be given OTC to kids so I'd go to GP as soon as you can manage.

Could you ask your pharmacist tonight or tomorrow rather than having to wait for GP appointment?

sandyposy · 12/05/2018 21:03

Thankyou! So seems it is an ulcer - the yellow-ness was worrying me a bit,I thought they were white. He eats a very restricted (and dreadful) diet due to sensory issues related to ASD, and also I think the top molar is the one rubbing. WreckTangled, thanks also re dentist not GP.

OP, can you give him Abidec drops daily in a drink he likes (milkshake? cocoa? OJ?) as they might help ensure he's not vitamin deprived.

Also just in case it's relevant, lots of toothpaste brands can cause mouth ulcers - is he still on milk teeth otthpaste or have you moved on? If not, maybe go back to children's toothpaste or try him on a sodium laurel sulphate-free one (hard to find - one of the sensodyne's is SLS free, otherwise you may need to try a herbal one from Holland and Barrett.) DS has this problem. He also gets mouth ulcers from bananas - again very common problem. So try cutting those out until his mouth has healed.

I don't find Iglu helps as it;s so hard to get it into the right place, and for anyone with sensory issues it's really noticeable. Try Calgel for teething babies. Better than Bonjela.

Thanks again all. He doesn’t eat much generally, but seems to be managing ok. With most things he seems to have a high pain threshold so maybe that’s helping. He is really feeling this though. I will take him to a pharmacy in the morning I think. Good to know that others also think it’s big for an ulcer - I was really shocked when I saw it. Feel terrible as he must have been in pain for days...

MinaPaws: he does have a multivit drop and is on regular high-dose vitD too as is very deficient. I need to get some extra iron supplements, though, and will try calgel also. Thankyou; was going to check out iglu SunnyTikka, but yes he has lots of sensory issues and would barely let me apply the (speck) of bonjela I put on. So may not work. He’s fast asleep now. Thanks everyone for the advice
