Sudden bed wetting

Nathalie1975 · 12/05/2018 16:39

My DD(5) suddenly started wetting her bed two weeks ago and has been wetting the bed almost every night since then. Before that she had been dry at night for over 2 years. I am hoping it is just a phase but I have read it can be caused by urinary infection. However, she has not been complaining of any pain when weeing. Could she still have a urinary infection with no other symptoms than bed wetting ?

Could she be constipated?

Nathalie1975 · 12/05/2018 16:45

I thought of that. It doesn't seem like she is but it's hard to know because she goes to nursery full time. She does tell me she poos at nursery every day but i am not sure it's true. She is not constipated at home at the week end.

I used to have this with one of my daughters. Can you "lift" her (i.e. Get her to wee) when you go up to bed? Once my DD had had a couple of dry nights due to the lifting, she tended to be OK after that, almost a subconscious confidence thing.

Does she have any other symptoms?

Thirstier than normal?
Tired more often?
Loosing weight?

It can be a sign of Type 1 diabetes. I was diagnosed when I was five. Bed wetting is what caused my mom to get me checked.

I could try to take her to the toilet in the middle of the night. After 2 weeks of washing her bedsheets everyday I gave in and got some Dry Nite pants. I was worried she would be upset but she was delighted because they have Tinkerbell on them... Now I am thinking this may have been a bad move...

No she doesn't have other symtoms. The only thing is that she is prone to nervous tics. She gets them for a few weeks (eye blinking, mouth opening ...) And then they disappear for months. And at the moment she has a mouth opening tic. So I am also wondering if the tic and bed wetting are related and caused by anxiety.

Speak with your GP; they will want to rule out Urine infection ,constipation and diabetes( unlikely) .
Then think about whether she is scared in the night eg dreams .

Check for threadworms.

Nathalie1975 · 12/05/2018 18:19

I'll take her to the GP next week. Thanks.

You could just look for threadworms yourself now. It us a really common cause of bedwetting. They only appear at night so gp might not see them.

Nathalie1975 · 13/05/2018 14:37

Thanks I will check for threadworms. I had no idea they could cause bedwetting with no other symptoms.

Take her to the GP. When one of mine did this the GP said that sudden wetting after a long period of being dry was often a sign of some sort of infection. In our case canesten cream for a couple of days cleared it.

Nathalie1975 · 13/05/2018 22:49

Yes I think it may be an infection. Today she also wet herself during the day. I made a GP appointment for Wednesday.

How did she get on OP?

Nathalie1975 · 17/05/2018 20:01

She had to give a urine sample. We will have results next week I think. If it is clear then I guess we'll just have to wait and hope it settles again soon.
